The city of Bradford paid tribute to the 56 fans who died in the Valley Parade fire with a special memorial service on Monday to mark the 24th anniversary.

The service was hosted by the Lord Mayor councillor Howard Middleton and the city centre came to a standstill for a minute's silence at 11am as people paid their respects in Centenary Square.

Councillor Middleton said: "We must reflect and remember all the people who were affected by this disaster.

"This is an incredibly significant date for the people and city of Bradford to come together and remember."

Tragedy struck on May 11, 1985 during a league match between Bradford and Lincoln when the main stand at Valley Parade was engulfed by flames just before half-time.

Current City manager Stuart McCall played in the game and his father Andy was among those badly injured, while two Lincoln fans were among those who died.
