Deans doesn't doubt Mortlock's desire

Robbie Deans has refused to endorse incumbent Australia captain Stirling Mortlock as the man to lead the side in the upcoming international campaign, but believes the 31-year-old still has the desire to contribute to the cause.

Mortlock's captaincy - and even his position in the national team - have been a constant source of debate throughout the Super 14 season. The 76-Test veteran, who played a significant role in Australia's first campaign under the Kiwi coach, has been shifted to the wing by Brumbies coach Andy Friend in recent weeks.

But while some have argued the switch is a sign his days on the international stage are numbered, Deans disagrees and said: "Stirling's shown through Super rugby again that he's still a player who has a presence and an ability to impact on a game."

He added: "As recently as last weekend ... his acts were the pivotal acts in the game that turned the momentum, but most importantly what was evident most of all was his desire.

"He still wants to make a difference as opposed to making up the numbers and that's a critical quality with any player."

But when asked if Mortlock would lead the side into battle once again this season, Deans said with a smile: "You'll have to wait for the team announcement."

Deans made it clear that no one's position in the team is safe, confirming his initial 30-man squad to be named later this month will be "a unique group that has never gathered previously".

"The critical thing from Stirling's perspective is what does he want to do?" he said.

"There's no guarantees for any player and they don't want a guarantee. Nothing is forever, they're all very conscious and aware of the fact that it will finish at some time but that's not the point.

"The point is what are you going to experience while you're in it and while you're involved, and how long do you want to be involved? What is it that excites you?" And the day they wake up in the morning and they're not excited about it then that's not a good scene."
