Gareth Barry has confirmed his desire to leave Aston Villa for Liverpool this summer.
The Villa captain is Rafa Benitez's top transfer target and the Liverpool boss has already had one £10million bid rejected.
Barry's agent, Alex Black, stated on Tuesday that the player was keen to leave Villa Park in search of Champions League football.
And Villa have now confirmed that Barry, who is believed to be valued at around £15million, has informed manager Martin O'Neill that he wants to join Liverpool.
In a statement Villa said: "Gareth Barry has stated in discussions with our manager he would like to leave Aston Villa to join Liverpool.
"But Liverpool's bid for the player has been rejected and they have been informed of Villa's continued position in this matter."
The presence of Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard, who is a close friend of Barry, at Anfield is understood to be a major bargaining chip.
And Liverpool are expected to up their offer within the next 48 hours as they attempt to land England international Barry.

PERMANENT FIXTURE AT VILLA....WINNING NOTHING AND NO EUROPE.....OR PART OF A ROTATION POLICY AT LIVERPOOL....IN CHAMPS LEAGUE, TOP 4, CUPS........JUST COS YOU GET A REST, DOESN'T MEAN YOU DON'T WIN STUFF. IF BARRY IS GOOD ENOUGH, HE SHOULD NOT BE WORRIED ABOUT BEING LEFT OUT......UNLESS ALL YOU VILLA PEOPLE KNOW THAT HE IS MAYBE NOT!!!!!!!!!
CROUCH SUFFERED COS HE HAD TO COMPETE WITH TORRES AND STEVIE G....WHAT CHANCE REALLY???!!!!!?
Derekorrocky, What a pr1ck you are, Make sure that you get an alarm on your house, This is the mentality of a child, Gareth Barry is wasted at villa, they have not threatened any league or cup competitions for many years, The player wants to improve himself by going to a better team to further his prospects.
I understand your feelings but when a player is winning nothing with a second rate team then he has to look to the future, my wish is for Liverpool to beat Villa in a cup competion with Barry holding the cup, This is just a dream as Villa are not good enough to win any cup competion as their record shows.
look forward to you lot playing Birmingham in the championship in a couple of years.
i prefere alonso to barry but since the switch is emenet i think that kind of cash is too short for an english international and will urge liverpool to get david villa on time liverpool for live
enny nigeria lagos
what has ferguson and oneill got in common they dont like it cos their players want to move to a better team barry just one thing check your contract sounds like villa could be in breach of it by with holding your services and your legal rights to move on
wellcome to Anfield, the club you can achieve your your goal
Barry will be a great signing for Liverpool. He will play in the hole that has been left vacant by Alonso's imminent sale to Juve, allowing Gerrard to play in the more advanced role that suited him so well last year. With sale of Players and cash from the board, Raffa will have in the region of £80 Million to spend this summer. I really do expect a realistic title challenge from the Reds this year...
gareth barry best left footer in the premiership, probably the world , to good for liverpool, to good for most other clubs, deffo to good for man u as u can see i am a villa fan. no one wants liverpool, man u , chelsea or arsenal to be allowed to use money as an insentive. just rememeber how small the villa squad is we gave u all a good run. bet none of the top 4 could do what o'neil has done. i will be very upset if barry leaves and i think he might lose his england spot. look at crouch. rafa is not bad but the constant rotation will be the reason most players wont go to liverpool.
Steve. Bang on, your dead right, Gareth Barry will in my opinion loose his status, I dont think he has peaked yet,If he leaves Villa. Where he is getting the coaching of Mr O,Neill, He will become just another Big Head, my concern is, will the National team fall further into decline beacuse of this? what,s happened to Gareth,s loyalty to Villa? Do we need a turncoat at Lpool?
Gareth Barry. Please stay where you are. With Mr O,Neill. A top coach. Gareth You are a huge infulance at your club. and to other pros and trainees elsewhere(my opinion) you are pushing Villa forward and creating compition, and contribuing to the game. The game will fall further into decline if the top 4 are allowed to buy and dictate how the game is run. We need you and other pros, to educate and show our yongsters how to compeat. Otherwise the National Team will fall further into decline? Stevie G is not helping with his comments, football is a nationwide game. and should not to be regeionlised. PS i am a 60yr old scouser, supported L.pool all my life.
can someone tell me what is the problem with some people about Barry switch to merseyside?this's a club with the highest number of premiership trophies, most successful english club in european football and has remained consistent over the years in the first 4s,what guys?!!!!Barry has gotten to the peak of football prominence and so deserves to be in a club with prospects,LIVERPOOL FC.let the truth be told,A.villa knows its time for him to move on and should not let its personal desire cloud its sense of consideration and judgement.David villa should also be thinking in the right direction like Barry to move over to success at merseyside cos come next season people...WE ARE TAKING ON PREMIERSHIP IN GRAND STYLE,BELIEEEEEVVVE!!
CJ,PH(NIGERIA)
Barry will be a good signing,he can be our creative midfielder with Stevie G being allowed to back up Torres as almost a second striker while Masch will be the holding player. He can also play left back in emergencies if needed.Great buy at 27 and already in the england setup.
Barry will never be able to dislodge Gerrard and Machrenena in Central Mid Field, on the left Wing he will have to share the duties with Babel. Babel will in time become an excellent attacking goal scoring midfielder.
As an LFC supporter I hope we dont put all our eggs in the Gareth Barry basket, we need more than him to challenge for the title.
Dont get me wrong I would like for us to have Barry, especially when Alonson joins Juve.
villa to end up fourth next year and liverpool 5th
good luck gareth, make sure you get your alarm done on your house
up the villa
Forgot to add to previous post...
Well, either his heart or his wallet.... ;)
Barry could regret that move in a a couple of years, we'll have to wait and see....
Permanent fixture at Villa or part of Rafa's rotation policy at Liverpool. There is no guarantee that he'll be picked for the Champions League fixtures anyway.
Besides, Villa are building a side (well, when we actually buy players that is) for the long term and we have plenty of money. Rafa is at the moment going around all the sofas in Anfield and trying to find as much lost money as he can to afford to buy Barry.
From one cash rich club to one who is a) skint and b) where the owners have taken 1.4m out in expenses in the last month.
I think he's thinking with his heart and not his head....
