Euro 2008 - Fantasy: Choose 'Em or Lose 'Em?

Eurosport - Wed, 11 Jun 16:49:00 2008

So you didn't have David Villa in your Euro 2008 fantasy team and your main rival did? Whoops!

FOOTBALL Luca Toni - 0

Never fear, "Choose 'Em or Lose 'Em" is here to offer you some hints and tips on how to claw back the deficit with our picks for the second set of group matches.

And if we fail in that task? Well at least you now have someone to blame.

Attackers

Choose 'Em

After the opening set of group matches some teams are already under pressure and that means they will have no option but to attack. Italy for example certainly need a win against Romania so if you are looking to splash big on one striker then Luca Toni (32m) could be your man. Antonio Cassano (6m) looks a good sleeper if Robert Donadoni decides to change things and start the unpredictable yet brilliant Sampdoria striker.

If you are looking for big money alternative to Toni well then why not just stick with Cristiano Ronaldo (35m)? The Portuguese may have a tough match up against the Czechs but all those who played the Premier League version of the game know that, no matter the opposition, Ronaldo is still a points machine. Even when he doesn't score he can still produce an impressive haul, with his 20 point performance against the Turks proving that point.

Elsewhere, the big pre-tournament worry about Germany's Lukas Podolski was about whether he would start. However, two goals against Poland should guarantee his place in the line-up and at 18m he now looks quite cheap.

Russia looked quite good going forward against Spain, despite getting tonked, and should find more joy against a dismal Greece side. Roman Pavlyuchenko (8m) is already off the mark in this tournament and could be a bargain buy.

If you are looking for a squad filler you could do worse than Hakan Yakin (6m) who will need to step up for co-hosts Switzerland against Turkey now Alexander Frei is out.

Lose 'Em

Spain had everybody purring with their performance against Russia, but their next match against Sweden could be a tighter affair so David Villa (30m), Fernando Torres (30m), and indeed Sweden's Zlatan Ibrahimovic (28m) all look a tad pricey this week.

Karim Benzema (30m) failed to make a big impact for France against Romania and may now have to drop to the bench to accommodate the return of Thierry Henry (28m). Nicolas Anelka (23m) also looks vulnerable if Raymond Domenech decides to mix things up.

Ruud van Nistelrooy (35m) proved his quality against Italy but it is hard to see the Dutch replicating that performance against the French, making him just a little bit too expensive.

Midfielders

Choose 'Em

Ronaldo obviously makes Portugal tick but Simao Sabrosa is important too and at just 7m he looks like an absolute bargain. Turkey's Tuncay Sanli (10m) could also pop up with some points for you as he played up front in the opening game despite being listed as a midfielder in fantasy play. Of the big-name players Germany's Michael Ballack (28m) and Netherlands' Wesley Sneijder (24m) both scored big and could remain key players despite tough match-ups. Xavi (16m) and Cesc Fabregas (24m) were profitable for Spain too despite Fabregas only starting on the bench. However, it is hard to see how the Arsenal man can be left out again so he might be worth a punt against Sweden - although it would admittedly be an expensive one.

Lose 'Em

There was lots of pre-tournament talk about Portugal's Ricardo Quaresma (20m) but the Porto man didn't even start against Turkey leaving him as an expensive reserve on many teams - look elsewhere for the next set of games. David Silva (14m) and Andres Iniesta (20m) both did well for Spain against Russia but one of them might have to make way for Fabregas against Sweden which makes them risky picks.

Netherlands' Rafael van der Vaart (25m) was outshone by Sneijder (24m) and the Real Madrid man now looks the better option out of the two attacking Dutch midfielders.

Meanwhile, Andrea Pirlo (26m) played a lot deeper for Italy in that match than many fantasy players would have hoped for and, with the prospect of another attacker being added to the Italian line-up, his attacking role could be diminished further.

Defenders

Choose 'Em

The perfect fantasy defender is somebody who gets forward while also playing on a team that is likely to get a clean sheet, so somebody like Germany's Philip Lahm (18m) is always a good pick despite his hefty price tag. Certainly, Giovanni van Bronckhorst (8m) showed his worth against Italy and although a repeat performance against France is unlikely - his low price keeps him appealing.

Chelsea bound Portugal right-back Jose Bosingwa (9m) looks the best value out of their backline and another clean sheet is a real possibility for Luis Felipe Scolari's team against a Czech side that looked rather toothless up front despite winning their opener with Switzerland.

Italy looked uncharacteristically shaky at the back against Netherlands but should get back on track against Romania. There might be some changes in the side though so be careful who you pick, but you should be safe with Gianluca Zambrotta (15m).

Finally, need a bargain? How about Joachim Standfest (2m) of Austria, he scored a respectable seven points in the opener, and the co-hosts should be competitive against Poland.

Lose 'Em

While you should be okay with Zambrotta, Christian Panucci (9m) could be a different story. The Roma man was a doubt before the Dutch game with a knee injury and his performance did little to suggest that he has fully recovered from that knock. Darijo Srna (10m) was the second top-scoring defender in week one but Croatia now face Germany who will be a much tougher test than Austria were. Patrice Evra (13m) is a great fantasy player WHEN he plays - but Domenech seems to prefer the less attack-minded Eric Abidal (13m) so once again you'll have to leave out the Manchester United man.

Goalkeepers

Choose 'Em

It is a risky tactic spending a lot of money on a goalkeeper in fantasy play so we always advise you to look for a bargain here and save your money for other positions. Why not give the co-hosts a bit of love? Diego Benaglio (1m) of Switzerland and Jurgen Macho (1m) of Austria are as cheap as chips and against Turkey and Poland respectively they have a genuine chance of getting a clean sheet. If you want to spend a little bit more money then go for Ricardo Pereira (7m) of Portugal.

Lose 'Em

No point in spending big bucks on a goalkeeper who has a tough match-up so Petr Cech (19m), Gregory Coupet (10m), Stipe Pletikosa (7m), and Edwin Van der Sar (7m) should be ignored. Iker Casillas (21m) and Gianluigi Buffon (22m) have great chances of clean sheets but at those prices? No thanks!

  2. Who is this Joker "gpcharrion"? What sort of sick sense of "humour" has he got anyhow?
Hasn't he noticed how much the absent England are being talked about, compared to some Countries who are there, e.g. Russia, Romania, Turkey? Why don't you just stick to supporting YOUR OWN Country, whoever they may be - if they have chance in hell of winning Euro '08??
Roll on, the return of England (and Scotland? N. Ireland? Wales? and/or Rep. Ireland?), in the World Cup 2010.......

  4. As an Englishman i'll answer your question gpcharrion. Yes i am enjoying watching the tournament, as an englishman i am bred to applaud good football, whatever the club / country. As a foriegn scummer you are bred to pillage and steal lol, only kidding. It's not nice not being there but it has allowed me to watch without any pressure or stress, as is normal when England qualify. What really makes me laugh is even though we haven't qualified we are still talked about more often than most of the countries that have qualified!!!! Get a grip so-called football fans!!

  6. i heard 4 english fans are behing bars after they attempted to commit suicide by hagging themselves with toilet papers apparently cos they are ashamed to say a word after their inexperienced side failed to go where the GREATEST EUROPEAN NATIONS are now. I heard some european countries like france, germany, netherlands and others are appealing to european football body to consider a "just talking tournament". obviously the "talkatives" will qualify and automatically win the cup otherwise, they will keep falling in the law's hands for "misjudgement"

  8. What's the point of choosing and loosing when some of ushad their teams reverted to the ones we had chosen at first, and not the one we submitted before the deadline on Saturday?

Until yesterday everything was working fine. There are many complaining on the messageboards about this problem but there has been no anouncement whatsoever.
