The 48-year-old Crawford has had 13 years of experience as an NHL coach with the Quebec Nordiques, Colorado Avalanche, Vancouver Canucks and Los Angeles Kings.

"Marc is a winner with extensive experience in this league and I am confident he will get the most out of our hockey club," Stars general manger Joe Nieuwendyk told the club's website.

Canadian Crawford enjoyed a Stanley Cup triumph with Colorado in 1996, a year after becoming the youngest man to win the Jack Adams Award for coach of the year.

Nieuwendyk said it was time for a change from Tippett, who was in charge for six years and compiled a 271-162-59 record, reaching the playoffs every season apart from this one.

"Dave Tippett did a very good job in his six seasons here with the Stars, however it was my feeling that we needed a new direction moving forward," said the general manager.
