Premier League - Ronaldo: Highs and lows

Eurosport - Thu, 11 Jun 16:15:00 2009

A look at the highs and lows of Cristiano Ronaldo's career, after Manchester United accepted an £80m bid for him from Real Madrid.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Premier League Manchester United Ronaldo - 0

2001 - Scored twice on his Sporting Lisbon debut against Moreirense.

2003 - Caught the eye of Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson during a friendly and subsequently moved to Old Trafford for £12.24 million on August 12.

- Scored his first United goal with a free kick in a 3-0 win over Portsmouth in November.

2004 - Scored opening goal in United's 3-0 FA Cup final win over Millwall and voted the club's 2003/04 Player of the Year in his debut season.

2006 - Became embroiled in an incident involving his United team-mate Wayne Rooney during England's World Cup quarter-final against Portugal. Cameras caught him winking at his bench after Rooney was sent off.

2007 - Helped United to their first Premier League title in four years, scoring his 50th goal against rivals Manchester City.

- Joined Andy Gray (1977) as the only footballers to win the PFA Players' Player of the Year and PFA Young Player of the Year awards in the same season.

2008 - Scored his first hat trick for the club against Newcastle United at Old Trafford on January 12.

- Scored both goals against Bolton Wanderers on March 19 as he captained United for the first time.

- Scored the Champions League final's opening goal against Chelsea, only to miss in the penalty shootout after the match finished 1-1. United went on to win 6-5.

- Finished the 2007/08 season with a career-high 42 goals and voted European Footballer of the Year and World Footballer of the Year among other awards.

- Heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid with United reporting the Spanish club to FIFA over their public courting of the player.

2009 - Hints of unrest in his relationship with Ferguson when he walks straight down the tunnel after being substituted against rivals Manchester City.

- Problems arise again when Ferguson argues with Ronaldo during a match against Wigan after the Portugal winger misses a scoring chance.

- Helped United to the Premier League title.

- United's Champions League final against Barcelona was dubbed 'Ronaldo v Lionel Messi'. The Argentine outshone Ronaldo as Barcelona ran out comfortable 2-0 winners.

  1. I'D APPEAL FOR SOME REASON TO PREVAIL HERE, DONT MIX ISSUES; I THINK RONALDO HAD TO GO BECAUSE HE DID NOT WIN THE FIGHT AGAINST LIONEL MESSI WHO UNDOUBTEDLY WILL BE VOTED THE NEXT FIFA AND EUROPEAN PLAYER OF THE YEAR. RONALDO WILL DEFINATELY NOT BE ANYWHERE TO CHALLANGE THIS AFTER THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SHOWDOWN. HOWEVER IT IS AS GOOD AS HAVING A REST. THERE ARE MANY MORE TALENTS IN SIR ALEXS CAMP YET TO BE EXPOSED, IN FACT SOME OF THEM WERE MISSING OUT BECAUSE OF RONALDOS INFLUENCE AND DEPENDANCY. THIS IS THE TIME FOR THEM TO COME OUT AND PROVE THEIR WORTH. WHO KNOWS, NANI CAN EVEN EMERGE BETTER THAN RONALDO BECAUSE THERE IS TIME FOR EVERYTHING. IT WILL SURELY BE A TIME FOR ANOTHER STAR AT UNITED. ROONEY, NANI, TAVES IF HE STAYS, MACHEDA, ET AL ARE ALL POTENTIAL WORLD BEST PLAYERS IF ONLY SIR ALEX CAN UTILISE THEM EFFECTIVELY. RONALDO BECAME THE BEST BECAUSE SIR ALEX LOVED HIM AND GAVE HIM ALL THE OPPORTUNITY AND THE FREEDOM TO PLAY AT ANY POSITION HE PREFERRE. THIS IS SOMETHING THE OTHERS ARE NOT BEING GIVEN OR RATHER ARE NOT BEING EXPOSED TO. TAKE ROONEY AS AN EXAMPLE, HE IS A CENTRAL STRIKER BUT SIR ALEX MOST OF THE TIMES PLAYS HIM AT THE WINGS, PARK IS ANOTHER EXAMPLE BEING TURNED INTO A WINGER YET HE IS A DEADLY STRIKER. SIR ALEX SHOULD ALSO CHANGE HIS ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE PLAYERS HE HAS. HE SHOULD PLAY SOMEONE AT A POSITION THE PLAYER IS COMFORTABLE WITH. HE SHOULDNT INVENT NEW TACTICS, THAT CAUSED US THE DEFENCE OF THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE TITLE.

  4. There is time for everything a time 2 born & a time to die, a time to laugh & a time to cry,a time to sleep & a time 2 wake, a time 2 rise & a time to fall, a time to pass & a time to fail, a time to come & a time to leave!I dont know which of the time is it for Man U now but i think Ronaldo's time has come 4 him to leave and continue wit his career. He wasnt born at Man U so dont expect him to die there. He has his life to live! I wish him all the best!

  5. I'd like to wish the guy all the best for his future if/ when he moves. personally I think it is a serious step down in class from united and I think the introduction of two world class players (ron & kaka) may start an exodus of names already established at Real. it makes me laugh how blind some managers/ presidents are, all attack & no defence at Madrid & I think they'll be fortunate to finish their almost default second place in La Liga.
To all those bemoaning him leaving united too, £80m can buy a number of top players that can help squad rotation & cover for many positions. I'm kind of glad it's out the way to be honest, gives us the summer to really have a closer look at our shopping list ^_^

  6. I am a life-long supporter of Man U and feel very disappointed at losing Ronaldo. I am old enough to have seen the original Busby Babes and believe that never before have United had a player with the skill and pace of Ronaldo. There is no replacement for him. The other so called best players in the World ie. Kaka, Messi, Villa and so on do not have the bottle to ply their trade in the English Premiership because it will be too much like hard work for them. They are afraid of the competitive edge which they will face week in and week out. I would like to see their world ranking after a season or two in the EPL. For these reasons, I can not see Sir Alex being able to persuade any world class striker to step foot into Old Trafford. I hope I am wrong.

  7. u r soles ( comment 14 ) makes a stupid statement. Its like saying Liverpool or Chelsea will fall apart if Gerrard, Torres or Lampard and Drogba leave. It just won't happen.

  10. He has undoubted skill as a player but no loyalty to his club it seems. Never be regarded by Man U fans with the same respect and passion that they show for Eric Cantona, Dave Beckham or even the wee fireball Carlos Tevez. Perhaps he has been constantly badgered to sign for Real by his agent who has pocketed 8 million pounds from Real Madrid in the deal. Still its like a breath of fresh air getting away from all the press speculation involving his will he or won't he antics. I think he may even regret leaving after all what is the best and most successful team in the world when he is sitting on Reals bench with the other stars who are simply there to guarantee the shirt sales at the club shop etc. Will United miss him, most likely at first but dont forget that United have been successful over the years even after losing great players. i.e. George Best ( the best ever for me ). Law, Charlton, Schmeichel, Beckham, Van Nistelroy, Stamm etc etc. One thing that has made SAF the manager he is is that he knows the game inside out. Just think who he could purchase with the £80 million fee he has just had put into the club. We may see Tevez staying yet, but Uniteds purchasing power can buy even two great players to replace Ronaldo without breaking into their already rich finances. Think this could all turn out for the best, and if I were a fan of another team I would not count my chickens just yet.

  15. Good riddance. Thanks for all the help over the past few years but you've reached a stage now where you have to go for so many reasons. I shouldnt say this but I hope you fail at Madrid & there is no way it is the club it once was & you will get nowhere neare the success you have achieved at UTD, it's a shame you didn't stay longer so that you could cement your place as a UTD legend! I'm sure this will be summin you end up regretting later on in life as there is no better manager in the world than Alex Ferguson. FACT

  20. briansharman, as also a life long united fan, weve seen them come and weve seen them go, SAF knows what hes doing i questioned his selling of van nistelroy, staam, and others and now i think he has done the right thing, over the past month or so in the season rooney was in my opinion left out to rot on the wing, he is not a winger just look last night where he is best, he is world class to remember. even though we dont really know this, but i think ronaldo thinks he is bigger than our club, in which he is not, dont get me wrong he has been fantastic over the last few years to us, and i wish him all the best in his new life at madrid, but it was time for him to move on 12million = 80 million thats good business, and even if SAF only gets half of that to spend its worth it.maybe TEVES will be in the running next season at old trafford, sad to see him go, but glad also in a funny way, have a nice day
