World Cup qual - Capello won't be drawn

Eurosport - Thu, 11 Jun 13:18:00 2009

Italian Fabio Capello refused to speculate on England's World Cup chances following their 6-0 demolition of Andorra, despite the obvious improvement in the 16 months since his first match in charge.

2009 England Fabio Capello - 0

Victory maintained England's perfect record in Group Six with seven wins from seven matches, meaning they only need three points from their last three qualifiers to ensure their place in next year's finals in South Africa.

It would need a monumental collapse of form for England not to reach the finals but still Capello would not be drawn.

"It is too far away," he said. "But tonight we were very strong. We created two chances to score before Wayne Rooney's first goal. Always when you play against a team that isn't strong you have to win the ball back and we did this."

Rooney scored twice to take his international tally to 24 and become the first player since Gary Lineker in 1990-91 to score 10 competitive goals in a season for England.

Jermain Defoe also scored twice with Frank Lampard and Peter Crouch scoring one each.

The improvement over England's opening qualifier against Andorra in Barcelona last September was also evident.

Then, they failed to score until the second half in a 2-0 win but on Wednesday they were 3-0 up by half-time.

"We did not start so well against Andorra and we suffered," he said. "We couldn't score in the first half but, step by step we have moved on and improved."

Skipper John Terry praised David Beckham after the 34-year-old made his 100th start for England and won his 112th cap.

"Some of his passes were so good, they were some of the best I have ever seen," said Terry, who added that the team wanted to give the fans who battled through a Tube strike something to celebrate.

"I am delighted he is in the team and I am sure the fans who got here despite the Tube strike loved it."

Those weren't real supporters in manchester they were organised hooligans and many of the thugs arrested turned out to be english firms , it is a trick they employ around europe to create mayhem....so pls open your eyes and stop saying your all so innocent, no side is completely without fault. Most people are genuine supporters and only want a bit of football and humor on the terraces every other weekend, and i know 90% of people would agree with me.

You might have been to an old firm match but have you been to any other scottish derby games? a very family atmosphere, where families quite often grow up supporting the rival teams which tends to happen as other scottish cities are much smaller than glasgow. that represents the other side of scottish football.

Its people like you that has the small "village" mind and you can't see past your own ignorance to see the good in other people from other nationalities and other races - i bet you thought after manchester every Scot was a crazed barbarian, thats your choice and prejudice but well i can assure you we are not.

anyway thats enough from me. im not going to waste another thought answering to your dribble.

ciao for now ya wee dobber.

YOUR QUOTE: "if you have ever been to a football game you will see this happens and it is all good hearted"

Good hearted my arse! I've been to an "Old Firm Game" and that's why I made my comment...as I said...Bigots, Sectarian, and very aggressive..and that's just towards their own countrymen! I was also in Manchester when Rangers were beaten by the Russians in the UEFA cup final , the scots were like crazed animals, smashing shop windows, beating policemen up and stabbibg a Russian supporter.
Open your eyes for goodness sake.

Its called friendly banter between two great nations. Im not racist or bigotted or full of any hatred but it seems by your misunderstood retaliation you seem to be a bit of an angry person.

I will not respond in kind though as i am not that type of person, and most scottish people like english are decent hard working folk who appreciate a bit of banter between each other - if you have ever been to a football game you will see this happens and it is all good hearted, and for the majority of people there is no malice at all intended.

Life doesnt always have to be so serious and this is included in football.

By the way a few of my family were born and bred and live in middlesborough and i have some cousins in london - tell me why i would be racist to my own flesh and blood?

They give me as much stick as i give them and it is all in good spirit as my previous comment was intended and most people clearly understood as the ratings would indicate.

I also made fun of my own country as we clearly dont look like qualifying, and we really are not so mighty.

So come on troika stop be so cynical and lets keep the friendly banter going.

  5. It does seem that they go out to play football now, and not hide and seek, and last man to touch the ball cleans it sort of thing they where doing before under big Mac! The team enjoy their football it seems and they enjoy playing for Capello and when players enjoy playing the sky can be the only limit!

  6. Great night at Wembley, despite the to and from traffic problems, good to finish the season with a more than steady, professional performance as Andorra barely got one or two shots in with the crowd laughing when Green actually touched the ball, so enough said about Andorra. It was another solid step along the way, that's all. Well done England and Capello, just keep building confidence as you go. I'm sure I remember England in the past not taking a team like that to bits and whilst it may not mean we are necessarily likely candidates to win in South Africa it begins to make up for so many years of mediocrity. Tougher challenges to come but its great to have a realistic dream back at long last and it certainly beats scrapping around for a "must win" or a draw in the last two games to qualify for a Finals !! Well done for a great International season England, for once its been a pleasure. England til I die !!

  7. Well done to Becks , great performance despite only against andorra . Not many players can pass a ball like that , If England play a three man central midfield leaving beckham to play a in the hole in front of the back four , he can pick out whoever they choose to play out wide with a pin point pass . Its a weapon capello should really consider starting in matches .

  8. Why Not Dada BRZ, why not England win the world cup? Funnier things has happened in football. It isn't an impossibility, just because England hasn't had much opposition in their group, that isn't their fault that is the luck of the draw. They are getting better, they are getting their confidence back. All these wins do help a team to improve themselves even more. What is the matter with dreaming and hoping that this time it will be Englands turn to win it, and they do have good players, and when they play as a team and not as individual players then they could be even better, and I think Cappello has them playing as a team now, so give them a chance.

    Another small minded, racist Scot!
If there was a World Cup for being a bitter, racist, full of religious hatred, bigotted and extremely sectarian nation...Scotland would win with ease!!!
As a proud English girl, I would always support my country, but if England was knocked out of any competition...then I would support any other British side..including Scotland.
I guess that's the big difference between the Scots and the English.
So free your minds and come into the 21st Century, and stop sulking over the Highland clearance!

Even Kazakhstan would look good againts Andorra. You english , always drum up your team againts amateur opposition which would barely compete in the blue square league let alone an international.
And 6 goals , I think Spain scored 13 againts them.

'Beckham was amazing last night, glen johnson quality, ashley young quality along with all of the others who are at last being consistent.' the person who wrote this clearly didbnt see engand play againts Portugal in the WC quaterfinal and fail to qualify for Euro 2008.

England has one of the easiest gruops in the qualifying stakes so of course they are going to look good , till the WC when they come up againts real teams.

  19. Dear England,
As much as it pains me to say it - being a staunch foot soldier in the tartan army. I have an underlying feeling that you our dear cousins south of the border are serious contenders to lift the World Cup, and this comment has nothing to do with you lads humping Andorra 6-0 almost any team even the mighty Scots can acheive that.

I think England can beat any team in Europe at the moment and you are getting better every game. However the real test will come in the high temp heat against teams such as Brazil and Argentina who are very comfortable playing in those conditions, although keep doing what your doing lads and you should outclass them.

Anyhoo being a being a good sporting Scot i wish you our beloved neighbours good luck in 2010 and i do hope you boys get to the final but lose it too a 90th minute goal from any opposition.

Don't forget to send us a postcard, we really wish we were there.

    Much love,
    Scotland. xx

  20. I live in SA and I have to say that the weather over here in winter (which is when the world cup is) is not much different to an English summer. In cape town its like a nice spring in england, in pretoria you have the problem of altitude which will be a bigger problem than the weather (look at argentina) durban is tropical and humid, but doesnt often get above 25 in winter. So dont worry about the weather, I think it will suit england very well. Just hope they dont have to play all their matches in Joburg at 2500 metres above sea level!!
