Springett gets medal at last

Thu, 11 Jun 12:56:32 2009

Sheffield Wednesday legend Ron Springett was one of 11 former England players and coaching staff to be handed World Cup winners' medals 43 years after the famous win over West Germany in 1966.

Springett received his medal after being a part of the England squad which won the competition following a recent FIFA ruling to belatedly award all non-playing members of World Cup-winning squads, dating back to 1930, a retrospective medal for the part they played.

Springett, 73, made a total of 33 appearances for England during his career and was first-choice goalkeeper in the 1962 World Cup finals in Chile, but played second fiddle to Gordon Banks in 1966.

  1. Yes, Ron was the finest keeper ever to wear the Wednesday Number 1 shirt. Alan Hodgkinson was the Blades keeper mentioned and for a number of years was, in my thinking, second only to the great Ron. It was Springett's arrival at Hillsborough that brought to a close the yo yo- years and saw Wednesday become established as a top six side for 5 consequetive seasons before giong to Wembley in 1966. It was after he left the rot began tio set in but that in no way could have been attributed to Ron's brother - Peter; another top-drawer custodian.

  2. Yes Ron was a top Keeper in his time, and but for the one in a 100 years star Banks was, he would have had many more caps for England.. Funny the Blades had a good keeper as well at that time.. who would have been England player, if he was around today
