World champion Mariya Savinova won the women's 800m race at the Moscow Challenge on Monday.

Mariya Savinova - 0

The Russian finished in 1:57.93 in what was her first appearance at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium in a decade.

The meet was a test event before the world championships at the stadium next year, and Savinova delighted the crowd.

Tameka Williams of St. Kitts and Nevis won the women's 100 in 11.19 seconds.

Cornelius Kangogo finished in 7:59.89 to lead the Kenyan sweep in the men's 3,000m.

Russia's Svetlana Shkolina won the women's high jump, while Przemyslaw Czerwinski won the men's pole vault.

Pavel Trenikhin of Russia won the men's 400 in 45.51 seconds.

The last time the stadium hosted a major track and field event was a Grand Prix final in 1998.

  1. I am wary of the Ethiopian lady Fantu but doubt her race experience and I think she has peaked to early but lets see Jimmy. Lots to look forward too. Exciting times in womens 800m running.

  2. Well she is coming into form at the right time as she usually does. So many women running around 157 I think its gong to come down to Jelimos superior speed v Savinovas tactical brilliance and ability to withstand the multi round format of championship 800m running. This event for me is the one too watch.

  4. @ #1 - I believe you are absolutely spot on with your call. In fact, based on her absolutely virtuoso display of race mastery in both the Daegu semi-final and final last year, I would say that the big decider in the 800 will be the extent of Savinova's fine conditioning. If she can - as she suggested - better the 1:55 she ran at the Worlds, then I'd say that there's no way even Jelimo will be able to avoid being beaten as the Kenyan (frankly) only knows how to run the distance to best effect in one way and could be picked off in the closing stages.
