Atletico give up on Reds target Silva

Fri 11 Jul, 04:30 PM

Atletico Madrid's sporting director says it is unlikely Valencia's David Silva will join another Spanish club - clearing the way for Liverpool.Silva, along with team-mate David Villa, is on several clubs' wish-lists - both Liverpool and Arsenal have been linked from the Premier League - and speculation was rife that the pair would be offloaded to balance the books at the cash-stricken club.

However, the duo have reiterated their desire to remain at the Mestalla and Atletico sporting director Garcia Pitarch has conceded defeat in his efforts to sign Silva after the midfielder helped Spain win Euro 2008.

"After the European Championship he has had, it is impossible," he said. "Frankly, I think Silva has always been unlikely to join another Spanish club.

"You're talking about a very important player and in the case of players like him it is very complicated to go to another team in the same country."

Atletico have been busy in the transfer market, signing Florent Sinama-Pongolle, John Heitinga, Tomas Ujfalusi and Paulo Assuncao.

Garcia Pitarch praised the club's swift movement in the close season, but insists it is unlikely any more new faces will be arriving at the Vicente Calderon.

"For us the squad list is closed unless there is a good surprise," he added.

"Anyway, the market isn't easy and the possibilities are what they are. Good players cost a lot of money and there are other teams that have moved or are starting to move and it's logical that the few footballers that there are at certain levels have many followers.

"There are teams that haven't moved or sealed some deals so everything is very static. There are a lot of footballers waiting and a lot of clubs waiting."

With competition hotting up for those players that are available, Garcia Pitarch is pleased his team have already done the bulk of their summer spending.

"For our part, I think we have an advantage and that is that we did everything before and now we are calm," he said.

"All we have in mind is the desire to see Atletico training and hoping that the new players can fit in as soon as possible, that they feel comfortable in Madrid, in the club and in the dressing room. That's what interests us.

"I believe we have to be optimistic with the squad we have and happy to have these players with us."

  5. I don't think Silva was a good in Euro 2008 as everyone says he was. I just didn't see it. As for his ability, he is almost a mirror image of Benyoun so why make a deal for a player that you already have? I was more impressed with some of the other Spanish players in midfield particularly in the final. Silva will get crushed in the PL.

  6. Even if we have Torres, David Silva would be a great addition for the Reds. David Villa is good, wouldn't mind seeing him at Anfield, yet perhaps Liverpool should get some better attacking left and right backs and another Mascherano to give Gerrard all the freedom to play his creative game. Lucas isn't fully up to the job yet, Alonso is great on a good day, but something more is needed. I love to see the foreign players, but would want to see more English talent at Anfield - David Bentley to start with. I'm sorry Finnan and Pennant weren't always at their best, for seeing them at their best performance was a delight! Football isn't all about 'great players' and 'big names,' but about team play and fighting spirit - the Reds must believe and really want that Premier title crown! They can make it.
