Top-flight new boys West Brom are reportedly ready to lock horns with Sunderland for the signature of Romanian centre-back Dorian Goian. The Steaua Bucharest defender impressed throughout Euro 2008 and has emerged as Sunderland boss Roy Keane's top defensive target.
Sunderland are believed to have bid around £2.5million which does fall short of Steaua's valuation as they want more than £3million.
However, the 27-year-old central defender is eager to move to England.
And the Black Cats face stiff competition for his capture, as Baggies boss Tony Mowbray is believed to have entered the race.
Mowbray needs to add to his defence after losing Martin Albrechtsen to Derby on a free transfer, and Goian fits the bill as he is comfortable on the ball as well as having a physical presence.
