Button confirmed for Race of Champions

Honda F1 driver Jenson Button has become the first British driver to confirm that he will compete in the Race of Champions at Wembley.

The Englishman is the third driver in total after German pair Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel to sign up for the event.

Button joined multiple World Touring Car Champion Andy Priaulx in the Team England line-up last year with the pair getting through the semi-finals of the Nations Cup before losing out to eventual winners Germany.

This season, instead of England and Scotland having separate teams, Great Britain will instead have two squads entered in the event, with the remaining drivers set to be announced in due course.

Button himself admitted that the chance to renew rivalries with Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel - the German team of twelve months ago - had played a big part in drawing him back to the Race of Champions for a second time and he said he was keen to give the home fans reason to cheers on 14 December.

"I never thought I'd be able to say I'd compete for my country against Germany at Wembley, but it was great to do that last year, and the crowd were awesome," he said.

"As soon as I heard Schumacher and Vettel had signed up for Germany again, I knew I had to come back to take them on.

"Last year was the first time I'd done the Race of Champions and, although it's all a bit of fun and we say it doesn't matter who wins, I was gutted that we lost out to the German team.

"It's the one chance of the year where we all get to compete against each other in identical cars, and I'm determined to help get Britain through to the final this time!"

  1. Button in a "Race of Champions"?

    Isn't that an oxymoron?

if losing was a competitive sport, then Jenson Button would be the Michael Schumacher of that world..
