Liverpool have completed the signing of Brazilian goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri on a four-year contract from Palmeiras.
The 25-year-old will act as backup to first-choice keeper Jose Manuel Reina, a role played last season by Charles Itandje who now seems certain to leave Anfield.
Cavalieri becomes the third Brazilian at the club alongside Lucas Leiva and Fabio Aurelio and is manager Rafael Benitez's (pictured) third major signing of the summer following the arrivals of full-backs Philipp Degen and Andrea Dossena.
"I know it won't be easy to get into the team," said Cavalieri.
"I watched some Liverpool games in both the Premier League and Champions League last year and I know Pepe is a very good goalkeeper. But everyone has to fight for their place and I'm sure we will have a healthy rivalry.
"I know I will have to be patient and work very hard to achieve my aims - but it is always like that when you come from another country. You have to adapt inside and outside of the pitch and get used to the way things work. But with hard work you get there.
"My confidence has got me where I am today and maybe people are aware of what I did at Palmeiras in Brazil. I am sure that one day I can get the number one position but that will only come with hard work."

we shud by keane he is class he has great finishing poaching making assists he is an all round team player! buy benitez!!!!!!!!
thats why i love utd, they all speak proper random manc rubbish. at least whe dont have to ugliest team in the premiership. even with 'pretty boy' ronaldo u still are all gormless, even when u sold chadwick your still got a team full of shreks. jon is out.
hes a good replacement but we really dont need one, lets sell carson and itandje and martin then this transfer will be justified. Can we get owen or walcott next please instead of silva or keane or riera!
TATES
dream on man, you wish ye had as good a team as united!!! i bet ur one of those stupid scouse supporters who tink der da best club in the wrld, unless ye get silva, villa and 6 other players ul never win da prem, dream on son!!!! da other 3 der bein torres, gerrard nd reina. hahahaha u make me laugh!
Thats good Rafa sells a great striker and gets another goal Keeper.
Thats going to win us the Championship.
Of course there is always Voronin and his stupid hair I mean he is so good in front of goal.
You know what, the more i think about it and listen to all these @#$% haters and Mancs and fags and so on, the more i realise how lucky w are to not have a @#$% like ronaldo or any other big headed ass_hat.
Sure we need some quality, and as much as I've changed my opinion on Benitez over the years, lets give the guy a break a chance maybe a waiters tray or what not!
What do liverpool not have that the Mancs do? We have supporters who talk a whole lotta @#$% at the moment!!!
Man to Man, bar Cristiano i think the REDS are a better team than Utd. anyway.
LFC 4 LIFE!!!!
Now bring in Silva, Atletico dont want him, forget barry and go big for Bentley..... lastly Babel can play along side Torres and two years time Nemeth will be the hottest kid on the block!!!!
Liverpool have stop buying players who not get chance to play. Itandje never play a game they are wasting their money to some players And reina is not that goog as he's saying
Jonaspachulia - I don't think you're quite yet in a position to tell Liverpool what we need. Oh, Houllier signed Baros, not Benitez. Also Robbie Fowler is one of the most prolific strikers in history of the premiership. Kuyt scored 8 Champions league goals last season. As for Crouch turning into a nobody, we made a profit of £4 million for him and he is a respected England international. Turning players into nobodies - what happened to Rebrov, Mido, Darren Bent and (Paul Robinson) at Tottenham ? I like Tottenham but weren't they according to most experts tipped to take 4th spot last season.....? Oh my. Good luck though.
Rafa is stupid promising a star striker!
He signs players who he doesn't need or who aren't good enough!
Liverpool supporters don't be to amazed by Rafa's comments.
When Liverpool / Rafa says a big name striker is coming, he means strikers like; Robbie Fowler, Peter Crouch, Milan Baros, Luis Garcia, Veroin, Kuyt and the guy who had a fight with Risse before the game vs Barcelona in 2007. All of which he has signed in the past who most of them have turned into NOBODIES.
I mean he wants to sign Robbie Keane who nobody can say is rubbish because he is a fine striker who can bag you around 15-20 plus goals per season in the EPL. But to me it doesn't seem like liverpool are interested in winning the EPL and more like trying to win the Carling Cup. They sign good players but only players that can help them achieve 3rd place at the most. They are not signing the big names they should.
They splashed the cash on Torres and that was the best buy liverpool have done for years and years. And if they really want to do well, they must sign one very good defender and also buy a winger. As I'm not a liverpool fc fan the best player they can get in that possision would be either Jesus Navas or Quaresma.
Good luck Liverpool hopefully if your lucky you can keep 3rd or 4 place and EPL and not loosing champions league football to the Uefa Cup. I think Totenham will be sneeking around trying to snatch the final champions league spot from liverpool this year!

Its a shame...
How can England ever produce a team that is good enough to compete with the other national teams when the majority of premier ship teams have all foreign players. There needs to be a cap on the amount of foreign players that can actually be on the pitch at a given time. The number i am throwing out is 3. The top teams can afford to buy the best players (which appear to be foreign). The result is they win more championships, giving them more money, and creating a rift which will continuously widen between the other teams.
Meanwhile the lower placed premiership teams groom good players only to find that the top teams dangle millions of pounds in the players face to persuade them to join their team. The bad thing about this is the top teams don't really want to play that player all the time, they just want to get rid of any threats that these players pose to them by playing on the other teams. Unfortunately money has made the premiership a 4-6 horse player race with the rest trying to gain headway in a no win situation.
It is time to take a look at the way that players transfers, money and unfair competition for players is handled. As long as transfer fees and wages are out of control then there will never be a fair system. IThe premiership would be a lot better if salaries were capped and all the teams had a chance of signing these players.
din_h92 wat intandji have you been watching he is about as much use as a ashtray on a motorbike!!!!!!!!
arsenal for the premiership!!!!!
Rafa has far signed some unknown players in the past which proved - and will prove more so in the years to come - to be good players with a great potential well capable of playing top-class football. Skrtel, Mascherano, Babel will become great players. It's not all about big names, for with it often comes a big head too! It's true that we need more guys of the Torres and Gerrard caliber, but the competition is tough and the budget limited (unlike other clubs!) I TRUST RAFA, and we may best not judge before we see the end result. It's Liverpool's fighting spirit that can make them overcome all opponents even if the others have far more money and 'bigger' players.
You are the best. Did you ever posted your profile to a celebrity and millioniare dating site called →UKwealthymen ? I just saw your profile yesterday on that site.
Itandje was @#$% last year and is gone already - perhaps the deal is not finalized yet but he has been given permission to leave. Carson is not the answer and will be sold for more than Cavalieri cost. He was on loan at Villa last year and they are interested in him and Finnan - perhaps in a cash plus players deal for Barry, who Rafa and Gerrard both seem to want. At the end of the day, Degan, Dossena, Cavalieri are a world of improvement over Riise, Finnan and Itandje. And if it works out, Keane and Barry would be a marked improvement over Crouch and Alonso - Xabi's best year in red was his first, he has dropped off since, and Keane can play in a deep striker role supporting Torres, which Crouch couldn't. With the current ownership and financial mess we can't afford to sign overpriced "world class" players and deals for bigger names take a long time to happen. Last year people were whining during July about the lack of quality players being signed but then Torres and Babel were brought in at the end of the summer and that seems to have worked out OK. Don't get all worked up until the transfer work is done. YNWA
manu fan here but what the hell is benitez doing. buying players for cover? fair enough the full backs he bought, but u need more in midfield, what happens if the barry transfer doesnt go thru or keane or villa. who then will he buy- a nobody from the middle east! maybe your coach that went across to do management over there (or something) will spot a good 4th choice keeper!
and looks like another battle for first second and third this season between manu arsenal and chelsea and hopefully in that order!
