Championship - Everton Naughton offer accepted

Sheffield United have given Everton permission to open talks with Kyle Naughton after accepting an offer for the young defender.

2009 Sheffield United Kyle Naughton - 0

The Blades turned down a reported £3.5 million offer from Everton last month, but have now agreed to an undisclosed fee for the 20-year-old full-back, who is currently with the rest of Kevin Blackwell's first-team squad on a pre-season trip to Malta.

The club's international chairman Terry Robinson told Press Association Sport: "We have accepted a bid for Kyle, that's correct. The two clubs have been negotiating this last week and we have agreed terms with Everton, but nothing has been agreed with the player."

He added: "We won't be revealing the amount until any deal is done and our acceptance is conditional on Kyle reaching agreement with them over personal terms. It's a good deal for the player and Sheffield United. We wouldn't have agreed to it if it wasn't a good deal for the club."

Sheffield-born Naughton, 20, who has been at Bramall Lane since he was eight, burst on to the first-team scene at the start of last season and quickly established himself as a regular in Blackwell's side.

He soon attracted the attention of several top flight clubs and won his first England Under-21s call-up - against the Czech Republic in November - after just 11 Blades appearances.

  1. Condolences,
Denise Hendry, the spouse of former Scotland captain Colin Hendry, had been in intensive care at Salford Royal Hospital for the last 12 weeks. The 43-year-old contracted a serious infection following an operation to correct a disastrous liposuction procedure done seven years ago. Hendry, 43, the ex-Manchester City, Blackburn Rovers and Rangers central defender, has been at her bedside throughout the ordeal. Colin, having recently lost a sister, my thoughts are with you. x

  2. Is it true that Stephen Hunt of Reading is going to join Everton? I read that Everton had agreed a price with Reading. I wish him well if he joins Everton.

  3. Chris, sorry but don`t agree with your comments...I have seen Naughton and reckon he is good enough to step up to the premiership. Look at Moyes record of signings from championship teams 1/Lescott... success 2/ Cahill..success 3/ Jagielka.. success 4/ Gosling..success and still improving. This shows a manager who can identify a player who will be good enough when playing along side top class players , and not have to spend an absolute fortune in football terms to get them. EFC need another right back , Hibbert has had a few injuries and cover and competition is essential without having to put another player in from another position. Keep up the good work David Moyes, and keep the future of EFC bright with your aquisition of young players to come in alongside those with experience.

  7. Sick and tired of supporting a team that thinks the key to success is selling its best players. If we had kept hold of James Beattie last season we would have gone up, the fact that Henderson and Craig Beattie (the worst player I have ever seen for Sheff utd) couldn't score score in a brothel shows exactly what Blackwell has in plan for the team, To let Naughton go is just criminal, especially when he will be replaced by some over the hill past is fullback who we wont get half a dozen decent games out of... Just wish they showed as much passion in improving the team as they did in chasing west ham for compensation.. guess that just shows the real motivation of the board... MONEY MONEY MONEY..Absolute joke

  8. Another class move by Moyes, taking good players from the championship and turning them into very good prem players just like he did with Cahill and Lescott.

  13. Same old Blades board!!!!.... No sooner is the season ticket money in they're selling off our best players and filling their own pockets again, exactly the same as so many United boards before them, what a bunch of Ambitionless, Spineless Kippers they are. Also kevin "We haven't accepted a bid for Beattie!". We don't need to sell our 'stars', cos We are not a selling club" McCabe's Teflon coating is starting to wear very very thin, in fact it's now become Transparent!!. We've got to wake up & smell the bull-manure!, & quick Blades!!!!.
