Micky Adams tasted defeat in his first game in charge of Port Vale as they lost 1-0 at Biddulph.
Geoff McGaw's 43rd-minute goal proved to be the difference between the two sides as Adams played a different side in either half.
Adam Yates was the only one of Adams' summer signings to play, as Tommy Fraser and Doug Loft sat out.
