Michael Svensson had mixed emotions after completing his fairytale comeback for Southampton following a four-year injury battle. The Swedish defender, who had a fifth knee operation last summer and continued to build his fitness with Saints despite being out of contract, was named captain for the opening Championship fixture at Cardiff.
But his big day ended in disappointment as Roger Johnson's last-minute winner condemned Southampton to a 2-1 defeat.
"Conceding a late goal is never a good thing and that was really disappointing," said Svensson.
"I thought we defended well on the whole and we had a lot of defending to do.
"It was great to be back, though, and fantastic to lead the side out as captain too. I never gave up hope and I always tried to stay positive."

New season....same old saints. Even though we hardly have any of the same old players. 50/50 for us to go down I reck. Boooo. Birmingham next another tough one and another loss. Hard to be optimistic when you support this particular south coast team.
i thought cardiff outplayed southampton and it was only a matter of time they get the winner as in the last minute , southampton has a lot of work to do this season to stay up , a very poor team , they have the prospect of the young striker who scored but if he scores a few more goals he be sold ,
Same old Saints another late goal again, when will they learn it better to get a point than lose all three.
This will see use in L1 if we can't improve and defend for a draw.
