Premier League - Zamora suffers broken leg

Fulham striker Bobby Zamora suffered a broken leg in Saturday's 2-1 Premier League victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers, manager Mark Hughes confirmed.

The forward suffered the injury in a challenge with Wolves midfielder Karl Henry after 27 minutes and left the pitch on a stretcher after receiving oxygen.

"He has broken his leg just above the ankle," Hughes told the BBC.

"He will have an operation tomorrow. He's out for a minimum of four months but if it's worse it could be longer. It's a big loss."

The injury is a huge personal blow of Zamora who missed out on a possible place in England's World Cup finals squad after needing surgery on an Achilles injury that dogged him in the last few weeks of last season.

Fulham, who had drawn their first three games of the season, looked set for a fourth until new signing Mousa Dembele grabbed his second goal of the game in the last minute after Jelle van Damme had given Wolves an early lead - see separate story for full match report.

  1. Wolves were cynical rather than dirty. Tackle on Bobby was fair and the leg break just one of those things that happen in a contact sport. He will be missed over the comi ng months though.

  2. England 'star'? How many caps has he got to his name? Yahoo please stop publishing incredibly misleading headlines. Anyway I wish Bobby a speedy and healthy recovery.

  3. Firstly, I hope that Bobby gets well really soon. I saw him last season when Fulham had some cheap prices for one of their European games. Takes too many chances before he scores for my liking but still a good player. I also agree with those who would want to kick the "thugs" out of football but I hope you will all be as vocal if one of your own team's players is involved. While I would like to see a clampdown on dangerous tackles I don't want to see football become a non contact sport. I watched the World Cup and haved watched MOTD this season and seen many players punished for strong but fair tackles. I've seen players who have not been touched rolling around as if they are dying. Not every tackle where a player gets injured is a bad tackle, players can be injured going for a 50-50 ball. Not every bad tackle is intentional although the fans of the injured player will usually want the player to be banned forever. I hope Blatter doesn't read these post otherwise he'll ban tackling forever.

  15. @48 too true the whole wolves team should be fined and points deducted for there conduct over the last 2 games. Pretty obvious mcarthy has told them to go out and tackle as hard as possible with disregard to other players safety.

  16. I'm sure that all football fans would wish Bobby a safe a speedy recovery; such a pity just as his 'star' was really starting to shine.

  17. Henry shouldn't have been playing this game. He should have been serving a three match ban for his disgusting challenges on Joey Barton which MOTD and the media found hilarious. Not so funny now is it now an english striker in the prime of his career suffers a broken leg. McCarthy and Henry should be ashamed of themselves. I wish Zamora a speedy recovery
