Charlton Athletic have confirmed that they are in talks to sell the Championship club to an Arab consortium headed by Sheikh Mohammed.

Dubai-based group Zabeel Investments have made a cash offer for the South East London side, who were relegated from the Premier League in the summer of 2007.

"The passion of the fans at Charlton, the heritage of the club and the unique status it enjoys in the community make it an exciting proposition for us," Mohammed Al Hashimi, executive chairman of Zabeel Investments, told the club website.

Zabeel are owned by Dubai's ruler and renowned horse breeder Sheikh Mohammed.

They were one of Mike Ashley's targets when he first tried to sell Newcastle in September, but opted against purchasing the North East giants.

Charlton, however, have a reputation as a stable, family-based club, who carry out significant work in the local community and have a well-respected youth system.

Manager Alan Pardew does, however, face similar problems to his predecessor Alan Curbishley in that Charlton lack the financial muscle to compete with Premier League clubs.

The Addicks currently lie 14th in the Championship.

  1. To be honest, this could really be a fantastic move for the club, the reason we are quite attractive at the moment is our excellent links with the community and the south east of England, we have a good youth set up which can become even better if we have more finances to play with, the set up of the club is great and a closely knit family club. Any extra funds in the transfer window is a big bonus but because a club is being taken over does not mean that there will be excess amounts of money for players, I believe that it will take a couple of years to see the full effects of a take over.

  4. Charlton fans, be very worried.
You are hardly a glamour club and let's face it, hardly a sleeping giant; so what's the real deal here? Forgive me if i appear somewhat cynical but there's something not quite right about this one!

  9. It would be nice to see Charlton with some money to buy players. The Charlton fans have been through enough, what with relegation and poor performances recently. Lets hope if the takeover goes through, It does not end in disaster when they get bored with owning a football club.

foriegn hands just as all our industry is.
The only difference is that it is not Gordon Brown selling of the clubs, next thing you know they will be trying to buy up tyhe Houses of Parrlament they have tried
buying the stock exchange, but that now is not a good business deal.
