World Cup - England player ratings

Eurosport - Sun, 11 Oct 12:54:00 2009

Player ratings after England's 1-0 loss in Ukraine, although Robert Green's early sending-off changed the face of the match.

FOOTBALL 2010 World Cup qualifying England defender Rio Ferdinand during the 1-0 loss in Ukraine - 0

Robert Green (5) - The curse of the England goalkeeper struck again, although instead of a handling or kicking error Green was unfortunate to have been shown a straight red card a quarter of an hour in after Rio Ferdinand's blunder forced him to bring down Artem Milevskiy. Will now miss the next England match, a meaningless qualifier against Belarus.

David James (7) - Came on for Green and did well on his England return, making a couple of good saves and generally looking steady.

Rio Ferdinand (4) - Shaky throughout and not in his prime form at the moment, Ferdinand (pictured) was caught out by a route-one pass for the penalty and failed to clear his lines on several occasions.

John Terry (6) - Composed and powerful with the aerial ball, Terry was resolute under intense pressure after England went down to 10 men.

Glen Johnson (5) - Looked good going forward but was repeatedly caught out of position. Was unfortunate to see his good block drop to Serhiy Nazarenko for the goal.

Ashley Cole (5) - Not his best performance in an England shirt. The Chelsea left-back gave the ball away in the build-up to the goal, which took a massive deflection off his head en route past James.

Aaron Lennon (6) - Unlucky to be sacrificed when Fabio Capello needed to replace the sent-off Green.

Frank Lampard (6) - Went forward regularly despite the numerical disadvantage, he came close with a couple of shots but occasionally his touch and passing let him down.

Michael Carrick (5) - Filling in for the injured Gareth Barry, Carrick barely touched the ball as England quickly switched to a long-ball policy after the sending off and goal. His deep-lying, creative mentality does not match-up to such battles.

Steven Gerrard (5) - Sluggish and largely anonymous, Gerrard was taken off at half-time.

Wayne Rooney (7) - Worked hard and looked bright in possession, his goal threat was greatly reduced after being placed wide right following the red card although he went close with a late shot. England's best outfield player.

Emile Heskey (5) - The whole point of Heskey is that he holds up the ball for more technical team-mates but he struggled against a beefy Ukrainian back-line and was replaced by Carlton Cole.

Substitutes: James Milner (6) was energetic as ever but had little real impact other than winning throws and the odd corner down the left, while Carlton Cole (5) was disappointing.

  5. Ferdinand is the most over rated defender in the premier league . If it was'nt for Vidic or Evans Utd would'nt have won the league and england will mot win the world cup while they persist with that onion in defence .

    From jenky50, on Sun 11 Oct 4:23PM
  6. Rio Ferdinand is only marginally better than his relation Anton. They are both too relaxed and complacent. Maybe Upson should be given a run with John Terry?
