England's spinners began to make inroads into Mumbai's line-up today in the final warm-up match before the start of the one-day international series.
Nottinghamshire team-mates Graeme Swann and Samit Patel claimed a wicket apiece to end a stubborn second wicket partnership and boost their chances of selection for Friday's opener in Rajkot.
Their persistence enabled the tourists to restrict a Mumbai XI to 100 for three after 30 overs of their innings having earlier struggled to make a breakthrough after winning the toss and deciding to bowl.
The tourists had made two changes from Sunday's 12-a-side encounter and decided to rest Middlesex batsman Owais Shah, who hit a determined 83 off as many balls.
Nottinghamshire seamer Stuart Broad was also left out after suffering a sore right knee in Sunday's outing, which led to a recall for Sussex all-rounder Luke Wright after he was overlooked for the first warm-up match.
Today's encounter also gave another opportunity to Lancashire seamer James Anderson to stake his claim after being left out of the Stanford showdown in Antigua.
He impressed during Sunday's warm-up triumph over the Mumbai Cricket Association by claiming three wickets and captured another early scalp when opener Paul Valthaty edged low to Swann at first slip.
Valthaty had already enjoyed an early reprieve in the first over of the match when he edged Anderson behind but wicketkeeper Matt Prior failed to take the chance after diving low to his right.
Steve Harmison was unfortunate not to claim a wicket in the next over when he had two appeals for a catch behind and an lbw shout denied against fellow opener Praful Waghele.
Having survived a testing early spell, Waghele grew in confidence and claimed his first boundary with a deft late cut behind point off Harmison.
New batsman Sushant Marathe settled quickly and drove Anderson down the ground for his first boundary and despite introducing Andrew Flintoff and Swann into the attack, England struggled to break the partnership.
They resisted England's efforts for 24 overs until Waghele, attempting to increase the scoring rate, tried one slog sweep too many and chipped Swann straight to Patel at mid-wicket.
Patel quickly claimed another success in the next over with a smart return catch to remove captain Onkar Khanvilkar as England began to make inroads into Mumbai's middle order.
