Premier League - Team of the Week

Eurosport - Tue, 11 Nov 08:28:00 2008

Bolton goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen takes the plaudits for a stunning one-man show at Hull while Spurs striker Darren Bent goes from villain to hero.

FOOTBALL: Bolton Wanderers goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen - 0

HOW IT WORKS

We tot up the marks out of 10 awarded in five national newspapers - The Sun, The Mirror, The Mail, The Times and The Guardian - to create a total out of 50. The top player in each position will be rewarded with a spot in the team of the week, while the worst scorers will be named and shamed in our Flops XI.

TEAM OF THE WEEK (4-4-2)

Jaaskelainen's superhuman performance at Hull pips Paul Robinson's 43 score against Chelsea and makes him our Player of the Week. Ryan Shawcross is unlucky not to retain his centre-half spot from last week: he scored 35, the same as chosen man Alex as well as Titus Bramble and Brede Hangeland. Arsenal have four men in the side after their victory over Manchester United while Darren Bent's sudden surge of form sees him vault into the Team of the Week - until now he was a fixture in our Flops of the Season.

GK: Jussi Jaaskelainen (Bolton Wanderers) - 45

RB: Glen Johnson (Portsmouth) - 35

CB: William Gallas (Arsenal) - 36

CB: Alex (Chelsea) - 35

LB: Gael Clichy (Arsenal) - 35

RM: Matthew Taylor (Bolton Wanderers) - 35

CM: Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal) - 38

CM: Danny Murphy (Fulham) - 38

LM: Samir Nasri (Arsenal) - 43

FW: Darren Bent (Tottenham Hotspur) - 41

FW: Robbie Keane (Liverpool) - 40

FLOPS OF THE WEEK

Benoit Essou-Ekotto was rubbish enough at left-back to make our Flops line-up two weeks in a row despite Spurs' win at Manchester City. Eastlands captain Richard Dunne had a nightmare but is spared the Flop of the Week mantle as team-mate Gelson Fernandes, who was also sent off, proved just as useless. Scott Carson and Brad Friedel scored as poorly as one another between the sticks, but Carson edges it as he was facing old club Liverpool - TOTW callously rubbing salt in his wound.

GK: Scott Carson (West Bromwich Albion) - 27

RB: Carlos Cuellar (Aston Villa) - 24

CB: Richard Dunne (Manchester City) - 20

CB: Claudio Cacapa (Newcastle United) - 25

LB: Benoit Essou-Ekotto (Tottenham Hotspur) - 25

RM: Vincenzo Grella (Blackburn Rovers) - 23

CM: Gelson Fernandes (Manchester City) - 19

CM: Keith Andrews (Blackburn Rovers) - 24

LM: Julien Faubert (West Ham United) - 24

FW: Roman Bednar (West Bromwich Albion) - 24

FW: Johan Elmander (Bolton Wanderers) - 24

TEAM OF THE SEASON (minimum six starts)

Kamil Zayatte edges Martin Laursen out of the Team of the Season line-up to join Hull central defensive partner Michael Turner, although the Tigers somehow lost at home to Jaaskelainen's Bolton. There are no other changes, although Tuncay Sanli (34.43) is right behind Fernando Torres after the Turk's two goals gave Middlesbrough victory at Aston Villa. Frank Lampard remains ahead of the pack in the race for Player of the Season.

GK: Shay Given (Newcastle United) - 34.42 average

RB: Jose Bosingwa (Chelsea) - 33.58

CB: Kamil Zayatte (Hull City) - 34.13

CB: Michael Turner (Hull City) - 34.25

LB: Gael Clichy (Arsenal) - 33.18

RM: Shaun Wright-Phillips (Manchester City) - 34.8

CM: Frank Lampard (Chelsea) - 36.67

CM: Javier Mascherano (Liverpool) - 35.17

LM: Samir Nasri (Arsenal) - 36

FW: Dimitar Berbatov (Manchester United) - 34.44

FW: Fernando Torres (Liverpool) - 34.67

FLOPS OF THE SEASON

Bent's brace at Man City places Dave Kitson firmly in the mire alongside Roman Pavlyuchenko. Multi million-pound man Vedran Corluka is the surprise choice at left-back - despite the Harry Redknapp revival, Spurs still have four players in this season's overall hall of shame.

GK: Heurelho Gomes (Tottenham Hotspur) - 28.29

RB: Vedran Corluka (Tottenham Hotspur) - 28.29

CB: Ryan Donk (West Bromwich Albion) - 27.29

CB: Leon Cort (Stoke City) - 26.17

LB: Andrea Dossena (Liverpool) - 26.29

RM: Geremi (Newcastle United) - 27.33

CM: Amdy Faye (Stoke City) - 26

CM: Mohamed Shawky (Middlesbrough) - 27

LM: Gareth Bale (Tottenham Hotspur) - 27.96

FW: Roman Pavlyuchenko (Tottenham Hotspur) - 25.13

FW: Dave Kitson (Stoke City) - 26.88

  6. I came back to check the reaction to my post.
I thought it would provoke a reaction and i bet you everything i possess that the 5 thumbs down come from blinkered Spurs fans. Aren't you guys ashamed of your team? Sure they are playing really well, but they haven't become such good players overnight.
I am livid about the whole situation; if a jockey deliberately under-performs he is banned at the very least - the same should happen to these Spurs players.
There should be a FULL FA inquiry here!

  19. I was impressed with Robinson in goal this weekend but it does underline the fact that he is better when not having to keep the ball in his hands. Difficult choice for England now, not like in the old days with Banksy and Shilton.
