Fazackerley to guide Clark - Hoyle

Thu 11 Dec, 03:30 PM

Huddersfield chief Dean Hoyle has hedged his bets by installing the vastly-experienced Derek Fazackerley alongside untested new boss Lee Clark.Hoyle, chairman-elect at the Yorkshire club, conceded Thursday's appointment of former Newcastle midfielder Clark as the club's eighth manager in less than nine years is a gamble, but offset by the arrival of 57-year-old Fazackerley as assistant.

Huddersfield were granted permission by Norwich to open talks with Clark, 36, and the Canaries number two agreed to take on his first job as manager 24 hours later.

He has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract at the Galpharm Stadium and is joined by former Newcastle, Manchester City and England stalwart Fazackerley and fitness coach Steve Black.

Hoyle said: "I cannot stress enough the importance of the managerial team.

"Lee is the leader, but he's only as good as his coaching staff and I'm delighted he is backed up by a duo that has worked at the pinnacle of their respective professions."

Hoyle added: "Some fans may look at the appointment of Lee and worry about young age and his perceived lack of experience and I suppose in that sense it is a gamble for the club as he has no track record as a manager.

"But he is exactly what I was looking for and will be surrounded by experience.

"Derek Fazackerley has worked in the Champions League, Premiership and for the England national team and has a level of experience and knowledge comparable with any other coach in England today and he will be instrumental as assistant manager alongside Lee."

Clark replaces Stan Ternent, sacked by Hoyle on November 4 after just six months in the job.

Clark had worked alongside Glenn Roeder at Norwich since November 2007.

The pair had been team-mates at Newcastle under Kevin Keegan in the 1990s and when Roeder was in charge at St James Park he made Clark first-team coach in 2006.

Clark, who played his last match for Newcastle at the end of the 2005/6 season, then followed Roeder to Carrow Road.

Roeder, who initially denied rumours linking Clark with the Huddersfield job, has tipped Clark as a possible future Newcastle manager.

Roeder said: "I always knew from day one when I first appointed Lee as reserve-team coach at Newcastle how ambitious he was to become a manager one day, probably sooner rather than later.

"I truly hope Lee goes on to fulfil his ultimate ambition by one day managing Newcastle United, any Geordie's dream."

Clark had two spells at hometown club Newcastle during a 17-and-a-half-year playing career and made big money moves to Sunderland and Fulham before returning to St James Park in 2005.

But his move to Newcastle's bitter rivals Sunderland in 1997 ended as controversially as it had begun.

Clark was spotted wearing an anti-Sunderland t-shirt at the 1999 FA Cup final and never played for the club again, moving to Fulham shortly afterwards.
