Johnson keen to recruit in January

Thu 11 Dec, 12:00 PM

Gary Johnson admits he needs to strengthen his Bristol City squad in January after watching the Robins collapse to a 3-1 defeat at Ipswich.City were leading at the break thanks to Stern John's early goal, but conceded three times in the space of seven minutes at the start of the second half. Jon Walters and Pablo Counago found the net for Ipswich before Liam Fontaine's bizarre own goal completed City's misery.

The Robins, play-off finalists last season, are languishing in 15th place in the table and are seven points off a top six spot after only one win in their last 10 matches.

"We need a couple of wins between now and January, and then we need to improve the squad," said Johnson. "That's what we are intending to do. I have been talking to the chairman (Steve Lansdown) about that over the past few weeks and he agrees, and my coaching staff agree.

"You don't tend to go public on those things as you don't want to disrespect the players you already have, but I think it is fair to say we need to improve the squad.

"If you only win one game in 10 then unfortunately it means some players will have to move on and some will have to come in. I am here to ensure we build a squad capable of competing at this level consistently."
