Laszlo in favour of winter break

Thu 11 Dec, 04:00 PM

Hearts manager Csaba Laszlo would have no objection to a winter break being re-introduced into the SPL in Scotland.A three-week rest period in January was a feature of the Scottish Premier League from 1998 to 2003, but was abandoned due to complaints from clubs about a lack of revenue.

The postponement due to frozen pitches of recent league and cup matches - including Hearts' SPL trip to Motherwell last weekend - has sparked a debate over whether the Scottish game should shut down for the winter.

Motherwell boss Mark McGhee has called for a thorough audit into whether summer football would be workable, something the SFA are reportedly interested in investigating.

And if a winter break was brought back, Laszlo would be happy.

He told Hearts News Today: "I was disappointed at the Motherwell game being called off, but in winter these things can always happen.

"I wouldn't have a problem if we had a break for one or two weeks, maybe something similar to what happens in Germany. But it would be difficult to decide when this should be."

Laszlo believes as well as matches being postponed, teams are being hampered by training facilities falling victim to the weather.

"What we can maybe do is look at the quality of the training pitches as well as the football grounds," said the Hungarian, whose players were forced to train at Tynecastle last week after their Riccarton academy succumbed to frost.

"In Scotland, there are only maybe a couple of teams who have the opportunity to have normal training conditions in the winter.

"For example, we had to train at Tynecastle last week as the pitches at the academy were frozen, but that wasn't a problem for us and the players enjoyed it.

"Our game against Motherwell and the Kilmarnock game being postponed wasn't good for football and will have had a negative effect on the clubs involved.

"We were on a good run going into last weekend but it was stopped not by opponents but by the weather. This was not good.

"If we talk about professional football in this country, maybe the SPL clubs could look at undersoil heating for training grounds. Quality begins on the training ground and you lose a bit if you have to move indoors.

"We as footballers are interested in as much quality as possible and this would help.

"If the infrastructure is not there then it is more difficult to realise potential."
