Strikers Steve Thompson and Kyle Perry thrust themselves to the forefront of Dean Glover's thoughts by grabbing goals for Port Vale's reserves.Perry put Vale in front in the 17th minute before Anthony Griffith was brought down in the penalty area just before the half-hour mark against Mansfield on Wednesday.
The lively Thompson saw his initial spot-kick well saved by Andreas Arestidou before firing home the rebound to make it 2-0.
Mansfield pulled one back just before the interval but it was not enough to claim a point.
The performances of Thompson and Perry, who are both returning from injury, are sure to have pleased Glover and given him food for thought ahead of Saturday's League Two encounter against Bury.
Griffith (wisdom teeth) and Dave Howland (flu) also came through the encounter unscathed.
