Barnsley boss Simon Davey has said the proposed deal to sign Jamie Ward is dead in the water after the striker turned down a contract offer.

The Tykes had reportedly agreed a deal in the region of £400,000 for the 22-year-old Chesterfield hitman but the deal later broke down after the player failed to reach personal terms with the Championship outfit.

Davey watched as his side spurned a host of opportunities in the 1-0 defeat to Southampton at the weekend, and admitted he is still keen to add to his striking options.

He said: "I have got a few irons in the fire and hopefully we will have a face in the building by Wednesday. I need to get one striker in, possibly two.

"We have to react to what happens on the pitch, so we will see what happens in the week."

"We have had no contact with Jamie, Chesterfield or his representatives since he walked out the door. We made an offer to Jamie and he turned it down, so that's as far as we'll go."
