The African Footballer of the Year announcement has been postponed to February 10 in Lagos.
The Confederation of African Football, who had already set two previous dates for the winner, most recently scheduled the annual awards function for Dakar on Jan. 23.
They said the change was an attempt to secure the presence of all five nominated players led by former winner Didier Drogba of the Ivory Coast.
Drogba has already said he has no interest in the award after a controversial decision to strip him of the 2007 accolade.
The other nominees are his Chelsea club mate Michael Essien of Ghana; Arsenal's Togolese international Emmanuel Adebayor; Egypt striker Amr Zaki, who plays at Wigan Athletic, and Mohamed Aboutrika, who scored the winning goal for the Pharoahs in February's African Cup of Nations final.
Drogba won in 2006 and had been expected to take it again in 2007. However it was given instead to Mali's Frederic Kanoute when the Ivory Coast captain refused to travel to Togo for the award ceremony.
Drogba said at the time that he had been told by CAF officials he would not get the award if he did not attend the gala, which came just two days before Ivory Coast's Nations Cup quarter-final against Guinea.
This year's finalists were chosen by members of CAF's media and technical committee. The national team coaches of Africa's 53 member countries now vote for the winner.

It is annoying that African players at home are not accorded the deserved respect.I think Mohamed Aboutrika should be commended for his contributions to African football. He has proven that he has what it takes to be CAF player of the year. His played against all this so call African heavyweights based in Europe at the nations cup and proved that ther's life in the African leagues too.Lets not take it away from him,he deserves to be among the 1st 3.Either he wins it or not,he has done enough to be among the nominees.
Have you people forgotten that it was Michael Essien who single handedly helped Ghana to 3rd place in the Africa cup pf Nations and his strike which got rebounded for Lampard to take all the headlines in the Champions League final. Where was Samuel Etoo then? Was Adebayor at the Nations Cup? And where did he send Arsenal with his 23 goals and 93 offsides. Are you people saying football is played just by Strikers? You have all turned a blind eye to Essien because he is not a striker. Personally, Essien is in the Best position to take the Award, for Club and Country.
Eto was not at his best last season. He will surely be in it next year as he is playing great this year. Abou Takriaa should not even be in the top 10 let alone Top 5. I can think of few Moroccan players who should have been there before him.
etoo plays for Barcelona habeeb, last i looked they play in a european league. however i do agree that he should be in it ahead of drogba and essien. adebayor scored 25 goals or something like that last season so of course he should be in it.
#1 Look to the lower leagues for your 'all english teams all english players' fool... Even though they do play good football but if that is England's standard then the EPL would not command the massive respect and coverage it receives ALL OVER THE WORLD. U'll probably only manage 2 teams in the champions league and probably not make it past the qualifiers. Try make it past 20miles from your postcode and learn more of the world.
I still can't understand why Eto'o is not in this list. I think Eto'o's achievement last season far surpasses Drogba's if he is the potential winner.
yea agree wiv no.10-sam f needs 2 grow up.
on d nominees, its bad dat etoo dint get in given dat cameroon did a lot better dan togo, ivory coast n ghana at d african cup.etoo also topped d goalscoring. it just shows dat caf only think of d european leagues in their decisions n dat hardly bodes well 4 what it plans
and wats wiv changing d date so drog can b there-nonsence coz he aint gonna win
aboutreika 4 award b'cos he won african cup n champions league last yr.
Of all the nominees, only Abouterika and Zaki deserve it. The rest are nominated because the rubbish CAF officials have been taken in by the British media hype over the EPL. Neither Drogba nor Adebayor deserve a mention, talk less of a nomination. And Essien, good player that he is, pray tell me, what did he do to be named player of the year? Now, the fools in CAF are shifting the date to accomodate Drogba...what other embarassment do they want to commit next? Maybe they will give the award to Samuel E'to to make up for not niminating him!
CAF continues to show its weakness. Right from the choice of its nominees, they had failed. They better scrap this their highly "mafiaed" award off. Eto'o for instance is the 17th European player and the second African, after Adebayor, but he is not even shortlisted. He was the highest goal scorer at the last African cup of nations and propelled his team to reach the finals. If CAF had made a mistake and wants to make up for that, the should come out clear and expose their intentions rather than trying to organise another dance which only people like them understand the movement of the steps.
