Premier League - Ferguson dismisses 'ridiculous' Benitez

Eurosport - Mon, 12 Jan 10:22:00 2009

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson hit back at Liverpool counterpart Rafael Benitez, describing the Spaniard's extraordinary verbal attack on him as 'ridiculous'.

FOOTBALL Manchester United Sir Alex Ferguson - 0

Benitez accused Ferguson of getting away with comments about referees during a four-minute monologue, also saying the Scot was nervous because Liverpool are top of the league.

After United thrashed Chelsea 3-0 on Sunday to close the gap to Liverpool to five points with two games in hand, Ferguson dismissed Benitez's comments.

"Well, I think you've got to cut through the venom of it," Ferguson told Sky Sports.

"Hopefully he'll reflect and understand that what he was saying was ridiculous.

"I think he was an angry man and was disturbed and that's all I want to say about it.

"At this moment in time I just want to concentrate on chasing the leaders who are Liverpool."

  4. Man Utd fans and players are jealous of the more handsome and attractive Liverpool players. What do you expect from a team that's lead by the bald Rooney and the scary Tevez? Can you compare them to the very handsome Torres, Gerrard,Arberloa and our very good looking Manager? Fergie is also jealous of Rafa's good looks and stable jaws,.... hahahaha

  7. It doesn't matter when a team won their trophies, you look at a club's overall history, and the facts are Liverpool are more successful than Man U, must really hurt you Mancs to try and come to terms with that.

  10. walkingsex1 you are an idiot, just because Notts Forrest aren't good now doesn't mean they weren't in the late 70's and early 80's , Clough and his team were one of the best around back then.

  15. Geo_clayton you are talking @#$%. In one of the years when Liverpool won the old European Cup, they only played three teams after getting a bye in the first round. These days, you have to play six games just to get through one of the group stages and we also know that your opponents will be a top four team from any of the European Leagues. Wait until Liverpool have won the present Champions League four times before spouting off about which format is the easier. I think all of us will be dead before that happens.

  16. Geo Clayton are you for real. Forget what happened decades ago. How many Premierships have Liverpool won? You say Liverpool won all those European Cups (Shows how long ago it was just by the name) when it was more difficult to win it. Are you sure! Just look at who won it inbetween Liverpool, Nottingham Forrest twice and Aston Villa. Which shows you how bad football was in the rest of Europe at that time.

  20. One of the most respected English referees ( Graham Poll- the only Brittish ref at the last world cup) agrees with Rafa Benitez. But I suppose that means nothing because the English are always moaning about foreigners so having a dig at them is more important. Shamefull really, considering foreigners are the reason for the premier league and its high status in world football. Ignorant fools who's pride is too important to accept the truth.
