Premier League - Managers: Scolari's 'big damage'

Eurosport - Mon, 12 Jan 09:07:00 2009

Reaction from Sunday's Premier League games, with Luiz Felipe Scolari admitting that Manchester United were "better" than Chelsea.

FOOTBALL Chelsea Scolari - 0

Manchester United 3-0 Chelsea

Sir Alex Ferguson: "As we've said all along we've got all the main teams at home and we really need to win those games.

"And we've got the first one out of the road, but we've got some tough games coming up now. We've got players who are playing fantastically well at the moment. [We play Wigan] on Wednesday and then Bolton away which is also a tough game.

"So there's a lot of interesting games to see in the next few weeks. January, as I've said, is a big month for us, I think we've got eight games in January so it's a big test for us."

Luiz Felipe Scolari: "Manchester United were better than us. I think it's done some very big damage because we didn't come here to play like this. We were thinking about winning the game.

"Now we need to think about the result, what happened to some players, what happened from set-plays and now we have to think about the future.''

Wigan Athletic 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur

Steve Bruce: "There is no better time to score than the last minute but if any team was going to get it I felt we were the ones. We found it very difficult to break them down with Jonathan Woodgate, Michael Dawson and Ledley King in there.

"Halfway through I was thinking it had 0-0 written all over it.

Harry Redknapp: "If you look at the results of Tottenham over the last year you have to be concerned. Look back to the end of last season after the Carling Cup and see how many points they have got.

"They had two points from eight games when I came here. How do you get two points from eight games? They [the players] put the club in it, it is up to them to get us out of it."

  2. I am fearful of the result on Wednesday and IF Chelsea do get knocked out by lowly Southend, Mr Scolari will be very much accountable. Regardless of how badly the team, are performing as individuals, it will be Scolari that will ultimately pay the price and lose his job. What has happened to this team that started so well in August? Now is the time for these players to really show some mettle and pride to get Mr Scolari out of this current situation and get Chelsea back on track. The season has a long way to go, I am sure that if the players get together and put in some REAL EFFORT and play to their undoubted potential, all is not lost.

  3. Sack Scolari??? Was he Drogba who kicked an air-shot in front of an open goal? Was he Terry who could not clear a cross that fell for Rooney? Was he Chech who could not palm away Vidic's header? Was he Deco who still thinks he can stroll by opposing defenders? Was he Lampard who became the invisible man of the second half? The fact is that the over-paid superstars of Stamford bridge have to take more responsibility for their losses and poor play, and people should give Scolari a big break. The man had said for over two months that he needs a more creative midfielder, but nobody seems to remember that. Chelsea were lucky not to have lost by 6 - 0.

i think you should get more works on the team chemistry..
because in the team there are a lot of players that have bad attitude..
please don't let the players be selfish!
with that i think THE BLUES will get back on track......

  11. Scolari should not be sacked after the team performed so badly.
Just take a look at the starting eleven, and consider just how strong those eleven players truly are. That's a very talented line up, mixing graft and craft.
Also, I think the formation was the right choice with which to start the game, considering they were at Old Trafford. Definitely 5 across the middle to snuff out the Utd midfield with the lone striker. Drogba is more suited to this role than Anelka.
    So why did they lose?
It must be said that during the first half Utd shaded them for possession and scored a good goal at the worst moment for Chelsea.
During the second half Chelsea changed formation to chase the game, which created a more open midfield. Giggs played like a man half his age, he was magnificent. The second goal from Rooney killed the game, and the third just rubbed salt in the wounds.
Scolari played the right team, but the team did not perform as they should have. Sack the players before the coach!
