Premier League - Ronaldo hits back over slump

Eurosport - Mon, 12 Jan 15:26:00 2009

Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo insists it is impossible for him to maintain the standards of last season but has vowed to recapture his best form in future.

2008-2009 Manchester United Cristiano Ronaldo - 0

The Portuguese is expected to be named FIFA World Player of the Year on Monday following his stunning 42-goal performance last season - for which he has already received the prestigious Ballon d'Or.

Summer surgery delayed the 23-year-old's start to 2008-09 and he has been criticised in some quarters for his form since, although he was a major factor in Sunday's thumping 3-0 Premier League win over Chelsea.

It has been suggested Real Madrid's very public pursuit of Ronaldo during the close season has unsettled the player - but he claims the drop off in his performance level was inevitable after the brilliance of last term.

And he cited the likes of Kaka and Ronaldinho as superstars who have failed to maintain their genius for season after season.

"Tell me one player who had a great season for two, three, four years at the top level? It's impossible, you don't have anyone," he told Sky Sports.

"Last season I think I did brilliant but this season, in my opinion, I'm not bad, I've scored 10 goals up to now (he has nine in 23 matches), I've come in from injury and people are waiting (for me to get) better and better all the time.

"It is not easy but I know I feel in good form and I think Cristiano is coming better and better.

"If not this season, then next season I know I can do as well again."

  1. I really don't get the point of all these clarifications...he is not really a winger..he is not this or that...Is it to belittle Ronaldo's achievement?

I think he was magnificent in CL last season not just Premier League. He scored crucial and beautiful goals (Roma, Chelsea). The header against Roma was super impressive...He created it with his agressive run to the ball.

By the way, I cheered up for Barca during the semifinal. I really wanted a repeat of 2007 when Milan took it (the only non-English left in the semis. I cheered for Barca, but in the end it was MU.

P.S. - I hope Barca takes it this year.

  2. zidane was able to maintain a high level throughout his whole career, club and international level, and he won everything, ronaldo will drop from here on. he can't even dribble a guy unless he has 40yards of space, and he just looks ridiculous when he takes free kicks, that @#$% has no shame. messi and robben are much better in that position

  3. #23 - Also if it wasnt for people like giggs, scholes, rooney etc etc assisting him he would not of been able to score like he did last season - I guess Ronaldo made that point himself:) Anyway, does that take away from his achievement? Van Basten had Gullit and Riikaard, Careca had Maradona, Etoo had Ronaldinho and others to supply passes:)))))

  4. His not really an out and out 'winger' though as he starts as a striker or behind the front 2 often, so to say he scores all them goals from midfield is a bit naive. Also if it wasnt for people like giggs, scholes, rooney etc etc assisting him he would not of been able to score like he did last season. Having said that he has done amazing and i see him in the same bracket as some of the top players of the last 10 years like henry etc although henry done it in a weaker(than united are now)arsenal side for 10 years, not a great united side for one!

  5. Who was better Van Basten or Maradona when they played together in the Italian league? Cruyff or Beckenbauer? Zidane, Ronaldo or Ronaldinho in Spain?

These debates are pointless. Just enjoy C. Ronaldo, Messi and Kaka play! Based on 2007, Kaka WAS the best. He carried Milan to the CL victory. While tastes differ and you may like Messi's style more than C. Ronaldo's, he WAS the best in 2008 and he is right saying that it is difficult to win it in consecutive years. Not many players did it.

  6. Ronaldo is a LEGEND in the making! He has an unbelievable ability in many positions, most importantly setting up fantastic goal opportunities and the best thing about him is he still has time to taunt the opposition leaving United fans hysterical and proud! He deserves Player of the World award more than anyone for the amout of times people have tried breaking his legs and opposition fans cruel and harsh tanuts. I'm sure the taunts wouldnt happen if he signed for one of those teams, then again, who would want to play for anyone other than the best team in the world! Let's see a repeat of '99 this year, TREBLE IN OUR SIGHTS! Good luck tonight twinkle toes!!

  7. #18 - I doubt that performance is based purely on scoring (think about defenders). Let's look at the great Ryan Giggs. He scored max 13 league goals back in 1994. His next best goalscoring tallies were 11 and 9. However, during his Premier League career he also produced 289 assists in 535 appearances. That's an amazing performance. Again for comparison, Ryan Giggs scored 101 league goals In his 19 seasons at MU (he scored 39 goals in his first 6 seasons). In his 6 seasons at MU, Ronaldo already scored 77 goals (the season is not over yet).

Guys, you may like him or not, but he is a legend in the making if not a legend already.:)

  8. why can't we compare ronaldo with henry and nistelroy? it doesn't matter what his position is, if he can't score, it means he's under perform. as simple as that. no need to be justified by any reason.

ronaldo just not mature enough by asking for comparison. he should research well before throwing that silly question. now it's time to buckle up and get ready for the rest of the season. he's still got time to develop and proof his excellence.

  10. Comment 12 nails this arguement right in the head ! People say Ronaldo goes down too easily, thats because people are too narrow minded to really notice what is happening on the football pitch. Example of this for you all is the ever so talented Stevie Gerard, he has won many questionable penalties late on in matches such as soft penalty awarded against Atletico Madrid in the CL that earned them a draw. There are others but enough of him, it's merely an example of top players who have had questionable antics on the pitch. And so why be so bias against Ronaldo ? Oh wait I'll tell you why ! It's beacuase he is the best player in the world and wears a Man Utd top that every football fan is jealous about ! In yesterdays game Ronaldos shirt was being torn from his skin during a corner. I believe it was Carvalho ? but anyway Ronaldo was then flung to the ground in this process. Andy Gray said afterwards this was a penalty incident ! Did he dive ? No, Did he get the penalty ? No ! Cut the guy some slack, hes being hacked off the pitch for being talented.

  11. "Henry at Arsenal"...don't make me laugh. He never once had a season like Ronnie did last year......Ronnie's standards are much higher to achieve than just being the premierships top scorer.

  12. Comment 10. Is is realy mature of you call people idiots when you disagree with their opinions. No matter what he did he did still scored many goals and performed at his best. Thats what Ronaldo asked of!?!? the player who had 3 great seasons...

  13. bman - His English is probably a damn sight better than your portuguese.

The thing is with Ronaldo, most of the population who gives a damn about footy have already made their minds up about him. (geo_clayton being a fine example of someone who can express themselves like a teenager and hangs on to Ronaldo's habit of falling over but probably doesn't notice half the Arsenal or Chelsea players who do the same - because they're not Ronaldo)

He goes over a lot because he gets hit a lot. Sometimes he goes over too easily but the game against chelsea showed that when he wants, he stays on his feet and is a better player for it.

If he goes over too easily, then so do most other players in the professional footy looking for penalties and the like, watch the game and you'll see. Or just wear your blinkers and refuse to appreciate that he's good, just has a couple of flaws to his game like everyone else.

  14. He's having a great season. 9 league goals for a winger at this point in the season is already excellent and yes, he was injured at the start of the season.

Please don't compare him to Henry or Nistelrooy (strikers). He is not under-performing. He was excellent yesterday in Chelsea's game. Mind you he had an excellent season two years ago when he scored JUST 17 league goals. Anything above 15 league goals per season for a midfielder is fantastic. He is talented, he earned and deserved his awards and he's still young.

nistelrooy is a genuine striker u idiot..he simply waited for the ball and score

  16. did i miss something, or did he refer to himself in the 3rd person??? i never liked his diving and prancing etc...but this is taking his self love to a whole new level!

From bman, on Mon 12 Jan 12:27PM
  17. Van Nistelrooy 2001-02: 49 app 36 goals.2002-03: 52 app 44 goals. 2003-04: 44 app 30 goals.

  18. geo_clayton, I agree. Henry was top for many many years and he was multi-talented player. Passing, scoring, leading, supporting, crisis management.. Ronaldo knows scoring, which is great, but I don't think he knows anything else.

  20. so i'll say it again, 42 goals in a season is amazing and most certainly a one off, Most of us would say he is currently under performing, Mind you by the end of this season he might very well have 20 + goals which for any other is top class. next season he could end up with 30!? He's playing well, just not anywhere near the standard of last season. last season wasnt normal he was posessed, (how do you spell posessed?) brain fade.
