Premier League - West Ham reject new Bellamy bid

Eurosport - Mon, 12 Jan 23:18:00 2009

West Ham have rejected an improved offer for striker Craig Bellamy, believed to be £9.5 million, from Premier League rivals Manchester City.

Hammers chief executive Scott Duxbury maintains the club do not need to sell their best players during this month's transfer window, despite the club's owner Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson putting the club up for sale having been hit by the collapse of Iceland's second biggest bank.

City boss Mark Hughes confirmed on Thursday that an initial bid for Bellamy and Hammers team-mate Scott Parker had been turned down.

The Eastlands club, backed by the financial muscle of owners the Abu Dhabi United Group, have since returned with an enhanced package for the Wales international.

But the Upton Park club are determined to retain the services of their star striker and have again rebuffed the approach from City.

Bellamy was on target for West Ham in their 2-2 draw at Newcastle on Saturday and is an integral member of Gianfranco Zola's plans.

Hughes has money to spend in the transfer window and has already bolstered his squad with the arrival of full-back Wayne Bridge from Chelsea.

Blackburn striker Roque Santa Cruz is also a confirmed target for City, but Rovers are unwilling to part with the Paraguay international.

  4. Gary S - post 7 - "Up the Spurs"?!?!? That’s a bit rich! Is that comment with regard to their standing in the table. If so, I think “Down the Spurs” would be more appropriate…...

  5. waste of time bellamy is not the way forward its a giant leap backwards..and shame on west ham trying to extort way to much money for an average player like craig..dont need him at the club..go for santa

  9. Has the football world gone bonkers? Ok he is a talented player, but something of a loose cannon. Look at other damaged goods such as Joey Barton who are also attracting interest from the Premiership. There are also the players of 30 years"plus" who are commanding fees around £10 million, when at best there is 2 years left in them. Is there really such at lack of talent coming up from inside the club's youth policies andthe lower leagues that the elite clubs can afford to waste their money on such quick fixes. I believe that the transfer window must have been invented by footballers agents to boost their bank accounts. Suggest that the transfer window and agents be scrapped before the Premiership collapses like the Roman Empire did

  12. mark.winter, very good point regarding Podolski!!! He would not cost much more than £10m, however my opinion is that Podolski would only play for a London based club. I could very much see him playing for Spurs.

  13. bellamy is not worth 20 quid up the spurs

From gary S, on Mon 12 Jan 3:03PM
  14. 9 million for Bellamy would work out more expensive than 20 million for Santa Cruz seeing Bellamy's only fit for about a 1/3rd of the season . Why does anybody bother with the likes of Bellamy,Ashton,Jenas,Owen etc

From astonbilla, on Mon 12 Jan 2:58PM
  15. Hooray ! that's the best news i've heard today from a Manchester City point of view, Hughsie should stop messing around and go and splash the cash by bringing in Podolski (10m) and if he is so desperate to get his man go and pay Blackburn the £20 million for Santa Cruz.

  16. When is the media going to realise WHUFC dont need to sell anybody. The owners financial situation doesnt affect the club. It is being run as a stan alone business. Besides the owner is in debt for billions and selling Craig Bellamy and Scott Parker is not going to make a dent into that. Now selling a club that is in Europe and stable in the Premier league could add another £100m onto the selling price. Makes perfect sense to me.

  18. Man City will now end their interest in Bellamy and pay the assitional monies to bring Santa Cruz to Eastlands. Blackburn will not be in a position to turn down £20m.
