Dons quartet in fitness race

Tue 12 Feb, 06:45 PM

Andrew Considine has joined three other Aberdeen players on the doubtful list ahead of Thursday's UEFA Cup tie at home to Bayern Munich.Considine suffered an ankle injury in training and could join five players already ruled out injured ahead of the first leg of the last 32 tie.

Jackie McNamara, Jamie Smith, Derek Young, Richard Foster and Richie Byrne are all definitely out.

Zander Diamond (ankle), Darren Mackie and Barry Nicholson (both knee) also sat out training on Tuesday and face a race against time to make the Pittodrie contest.

And Dons boss Jimmy Calderwood admits the injury problems are undermining preparations for the club's biggest European game in more than 20 years.

Calderwood told RedTV: "We are still hopeful the three lads and Andrew are going to be fit, but it's very, very frustrating.

"We can't get any tactical work done, corners, free-kicks, how you're going to attack or defend them.

"Hopefully the four of them get back to the training ground."

Calderwood was left with 13 first-team players in training - including two goalkeepers and one new signing who will be ineligible for Thursday's game.

Under UEFA rules, Aberdeen can only include three January signings in their squad - meaning one of Stuart Duff, Josh Walker, Dave Bus and Alan Maybury will miss out.

A number of youngsters are now in line to be stripped for the game but even the youth ranks have been weakened with Stuart Smith, Michael Paton and Neil McVitie out on loan.

Calderwood added: "We would probably have to put four kids on the bench but our best kids and most experienced kids we have farmed out to Peterhead and Brechin."
