Stats back up James' reputation

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp insists there is no better goalkeeper than David James in England right now - and the stats suggest he is right. The Actim Index, the official player ratings system of the Premier League, confirms Redknapp has a strong case.

Veteran shot-stopper James was handed the England number one jersey last week by new coach Fabio Capello for his first game in charge, a 2-1 success over Switzerland, and even played the full 90 minutes at Wembley.

A perfect week was complete when the 37-year-old made arguably the save of the season to deny Bolton's Tamir Cohen with a brilliant point-blank stop to keep a clean sheet as Pompey triumphed 1-0 at the Reebok Stadium on Saturday.

The 21 points earned were enough to hand James a place in the Actim Index Team of the Week and propelled him three places to 25th in the Actim Index, leap-frogging Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia to be become the Premier League's number-one ranked stopper.

The news will come as little surprise to Redknapp, who insists there is no better keeper around.

"David's a superb goalie and, no disrespect to the other keepers, he should be in. He's top man and he's been absolutely brilliant for me," he said.

"He has been frightening for us. I don't think there's anyone that comes near him now. He's the best goalkeeper in the country and he would definitely be my England number one."

In fact, Redknapp has so much faith in James, he believes he is capable of emulating legendary stopper Dino Zoff, who captained Italy to World Cup success in 1982 aged 40.

"He might be 37, but Capello would remember Dino Zoff winning the World Cup at 40. Jamo will play on until he's 40-odd," he added.

With Almunia, Tim Howard, Brad Friedel, Jose Reina and Edwin van der Sar all standing between James and the next English keeper, Robert Green, the Actim Index indicates Redknapp has a point.

West Ham's Green, a surprise omission from Capello's squad, is 49th with 285 points.

That is 50 behind the former Liverpool and Manchester City player, who has made an impressive 151 saves this season, second only to Reading's Marcus Hahnemann (174).

A further place behind is Aston Villa's Scott Carson, while the other goalkeeper chosen by Capello, Chris Kirkland, fails to make the top 100.
