Andre Ooijer could be out for a month after suffering a hamstring injury in Blackburn Rovers' 2-0 defeat at Arsenal.
The Dutchman had been an injury doubt for the game after missing the Netherlands' friendly with Croatia five days earlier, but was pressed into action.
"He's been playing excellent, he's got fantastic experience, he's played in huge games all across Europe and that experience comes to the fore," manager Mark Hughes said.
"Of late he has probably been our outstanding performer and we are disappointed that it looks like we are going to lose him for a number of weeks now.
"We hope it is not too bad with Andre, it is obviously going to take a couple of days before we know the full extent of the injury, I would imagine if it is the hamstring again then it is going to be a minimum of three to four weeks."
Christopher Samba missed the Arsenal trip through suspension, but returns when Rovers play Bolton in the Lancashire derby. Ooijer's injury means Zhurab Khizanishvili should continue, with captain Ryan Nelsen still injured.
