Int Football - Super Spain down plucky England

Eurosport - Thu, 12 Feb 11:08:00 2009

A superior Spain side beat England 2-0 in Seville as David Beckham claimed his 108th cap, equalling the outfield record held by Bobby Moore.

FOOTBALL 2009 - England's David Beckham shakes hands with manager Fabio Capello after their friendly against Spain at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan
in Seville - 0

David Villa opened the scoring on 36 minutes, Xabi Alonso playing the decisive pass after Everton defender Phil Jagielka - making his full debut for the virus-stricken Rio Ferdinand - gave the ball away to the Liverpool ace.

And substitute Fernando Llorente, on for Fernando Torres, headed home a second eight minutes from time following a superb free-kick by midfield dynamo Xavi.

West Ham striker Carlton Cole made his international bow late on and came closest to grabbing a consolation, rounding Liverpool keeper Jose Reina from Beckham's through-ball only to see his goal-bound shot cleared off the line by Carlos Marchena.

The passing and movement which was the hallmark of the home side's Euro 2008 success was again very much in evidence, Barcelona duo Xavi and Andres Iniesta linking with Alonso and Villarreal's deep-lying Marcos Senna, while Valencia goal-getter Villa also dropped off to pick up possession.

Reds boss Rafael Benitez cannot have been too happy to see his star man Torres start the match so soon after an injury, but he came through okay and impressed while not threatening to score.

There was a cracking atmosphere inside Sevilla's sold-out Ramon Sanzhez Pizjuan as the hosts came forward, playing one-touch football and seeking to unlock a compact England unit.

However it was the visitors who had the first chance, Gareth Barry - partnering Michael Carrick in the centre of midfield as he had in the friendly win over Germany in Berlin, with Frank Lampard on the bench - spinning away to cross for Gabriel Agbonlahor.

The Aston Villa striker, chosen in attack with club-mate Emile Heskey, stabbed his volley wide of the near post.

Spain had the ball in the net when the quick-thinking Iniesta played through Villa, but the pocket-sized front-man was a yard offside. Soon afterwards Torres saw a shot deflected into the air before a fortunate David James fluffed his simple catch but got away with it.

Jagielka then gave the ball away and Alonso moved it quickly to a position where he could find the incisive run of Villa, who turned the desperately retreating defender before finding the bottom corner.

England lost their momentum from that point and there were a host of changes at the break, including Beckham, while Reina and Alvaro Arbeloa of Liverpool appeared for Spain.

Shaun Wright-Phillips, who along with Agbonlahor looked good on the break without truly threatening in the first half, had to turn in some sterling defensive work after moving to the left to accommodate Beckham with full-back Sergio Ramos constantly attacking the by-line.

The Manchester City wide-man began a spell of promise for England when Beckham found him down the left channel; he cut inside Ramos and fired a curling shot too close to Reina.

Shortly after Lampard, on for Barry, headed straight at the keeper from an Agbonlahor cross, and until Hammers star Cole's late effort that was as good as it got for England.

Spain made sure of the win in front of their celebrating supporters - the locals were witnessing their 'rootless' national side in the city for the first time in eight years - when Athletic Bilbao striker Llorente rose to thump a header past the reaching fingers of Robert Green, who had appeared at half-time for James.

Beckham, who left his foot in on Gerard Piquet and received a dose of retribution soon after from Arbeloa, was booked for dissent in injury-time.

The defeat ends England manager Fabio Capello's 11-month unbeaten run, while Spain boss Vicente del Bosque continues the good work done by Luis Aragones last summer.

Both sides top their respective World Cup qualifying groups with four wins from four.

  1. Message for 192. Well now that he has got 108 caps would it not be better if Mr Beckham went back to the U.S.A. His record is played 54 FULL GAMES and 54 part games. Never mind he has one record all on his own, The only English player to be sent off twice well done Becks. will we qualify for the next world cup???????????. Disappointed

  2. I can't believe all the cr@p I am reading. You worthless bunch of shirt shifters wouldn't even be good enough to clean Beckham's boots. Why does everyone focus on the media hype that surrounds Beckham. Don't you people realise that if the man didn't have qualities, he wouldn't have been picked as the team captain let alone played for the England team. The problem with so many people nowadays is that they try to bring people down. If Beckham is no good, why is Milan so interested in him staying? Because he has what a lot of you posting don't have and that is quality and football sense.

  3. What was the point? why are we still playing Cole & Terry when chelski are playing poor.

Where was the passion as found in the premier league?

  4. This further proves how @#$% English foorball is. Only thing making it good is the foreign players.

  8. Gracias Yolanda! i agree that most teams have there moments of glory and some day we may have ours again. Spain are and always have been a great footballing nation, and will continue to entertain us with your brilliant technical abilities. If England dont have any success in SA (providing we get there) then I hope Spain or Brazil win it.

  10. I'm glad we have finally played a decent side, as a reality check was necessary. Although I think we're better under Capello, we can clearly see there's a lot of work to be done. Spain were without a centre half and a midfielder that would walk into most sides in the world, and they still made us look ordinary. At no point were they not in control, quite happy for us to stay in our own half and pass sideways, but once we crossed the halfway line, they took the ball back without any problem. That said, both their goals were the result of defensive errors, which may well not have happened had we been fielding our first choice central defensive partnership. Our goal threat was virtually non existent, and we didn't get the few chances we had on target, and I was surprised every time (or should that be both times) in the 2nd half that Lampard's name was mentioned, or Carrick's for that matter; I'd almost forgotten they were playing. As friendly matches go, it was useful in showing us what needs to be done. As for the large number of people who posted here thinking it was some kind of forum for pouring out bile on the English nation for the last thousand years of foreign policy, why stop there? Let's have a go at the Iraqis (Babylonian empire), the Iranians (Persian empire), the Greeks (Macedonian empire), the Italians (Roman empire), or if we can only attack contempories of the British empire, that just leaves the Dutch, the Spanish, the Portuguese, the French and the Germans, all of whom had similarly aggressive foreign policies in their day. Have I gone too far? You might want to clean the windows in that glass house....

  11. England were not poor or bad last night just that Spain were awesome. Capello is THE man to build the team, whether or not English players have the technical ability of some of there foreign peers is to be seen !!!!!

  12. Hi everybody...well as a spaniard, I obviously feel very proud of the result last night...being realistic, I think Spain's game was superb, brilliant and classy...England's game was not bad but was lacking a lot...all I can say is that several national teams get sooner or later their moment of glory...Germany had it, France had it, Italy had it.. and now is Spain's turn...that's all....and for sure England will have it too...in all honesty, Spain has a lot of respect for english football as yet...since they have always been considered as a powerful country in this sport...I have been living in UK for more than 10 years..and i remember at that time...all they were showing is italian football....now all they show is spanish football...well..definetely something has changed and we need to enjoy it...but hey England..your moment will arrive too...do dont give up!!! :-)

  14. #169 neil e, Absolutely crack on fella !! Spain were more than decent last night and as we did not have our best side out you cannot thoroughly judge "where we are" without the obvious talents that were missing for one reason or another. Capello's "the" man, trust him to do his job and when we've qualified for the World Cup no-one will give a flying @#$% about last nights Friendly !! Suggest we the fans get behind the team fully because the players are our current crop and support is always better than derision. We need some new terrace songs to sing as well, cos the team needs a big lift at times and whilst we all love the standards, we need to give the team a bigger boost from the stands. Well done to Spain though , thanks for showing us the way forward !!

  16. well done David on your 108 caps. a great acheivment. the england manager should play becks in every game. if all the team showed as much passion and patriotism we might have a better chance in world football. becks is still the best crosser and provider in the english game and gives 200% every time. more of the same please David. 18. Excellent football by Spain, they showed us how the game is meant to be played these days. Very good reality check for England, yes so they missed Rooney, Gerrard, J.Cole.... but i personally don't think that the scoreline would have been any better in England's favour even with these key players in the team.

  19. I HEARD LAST NIGHT THAT DAVID BECKHAM ON REACHING HIS 108TH CAP THAT A KNIGHTHOOD SHOULD BE GIVEN, IF SO WHY WASN'T PETER SHILTON WHO HOLDS THE RECORD FOR THE MOST INTL CAPS 128 GIVEN A KNIGHTHOOD. WHATS BECKHAM GOT TO DO WITH A KNIGHTHOOD. EVEN GIGGS NAME CAME UP FOR A KNIGHTHOOD FROM A MAN UTD SOURCE THIS IS WHAT THEY GET PAID FOR JUST COS HE'S BEEN A GOOD BOY ALL THIS TIME DOESN'T ENTITLE HIM OR ANY OTHER FOOTBALLER TO A GONG. IVE PAID MY TAXES ETC ALL MY LIFE BUT I WONT GET A ANYTHING EXCEPT POORER. PEOPLE WHO SAVE THE WORLD GET KNIGHTHOODS NOT THE BECKHAMS OR GIGGS.

  20. Well you can understand how Spain won the Euros . They are a brillant team and yes the best in the Europe and possibly the world . England lost with a second string mid-field no Rooney and a badly missed Rio . However how are we going to score goals and who have we got to score them . England have One world class striker in Rooney and he doesnt score that much . I did laugh when Fat Lampard sorry Frank Lampard was on the bench .
