Two goals from captain Robbie Keane, one a highly controversial penalty, saw the Republic of Ireland come from behind to earn a 2-1 victory over Georgia at Croke Park and move level with Italy at the top of World Cup qualifying Group 8.
Ireland were rocked by the visitors after only 45 seconds when Alexander Iashvili slipped home an opener and Giovanni Trapattoni's side then struggled to break down the Georgians until the latter stages of the match.
However, they were gifted an equaliser in the 72nd minute when, much to the bemusement of everyone in the ground, Finnish referee Jouni Hyytia awarded a penalty, presumably for handball, after the ball gently brushed against the shoulder of Ucha Lobjanidze.
Keane calmly slotted home the penalty to level the match before sealing all three points with a close range header from a corner five minutes later.
It all came as a massive relief to the Irish after a disastrous start threatened to be their undoing.
Their entire defence was culpable for the opening goal, failing to deal with a long ball. David Siradze's flick-on caught them out but most of the blame will be directed at Stephen Kelly as he allowed Iashvili to slip in behind him before drilling the ball past Shay Given.
Ireland took a while to shake off that sucker punch, although they had established dominance in the match before their controversial breakthrough.
Indeed, it might have been the Irish bemoaning the referee at full-time if things had not been different, as they seemed to have a perfectly good goal disallowed in the 25th minute.
Damien Duff checked the ball back to Keith Andrews on the edge of the area and the Blackburn man then saw his shot deflected into the net. The linesman disallowed the goal though as he felt Kevin Doyle - who was running back from an offside position - got the final touch but it actually came off a Georgian defender.
Doyle also had a decent penalty shout turned down before half-time but Ireland were not doing enough in the first half to create their own luck with a lovely run and shot from Aiden McGeady being one of their few bright moments.
They also needed Given to help them out just before the break as he made a great low save to deny a fine effort from Beka Gotsiridze.
Led by the surging runs of McGeady in particular, Ireland looked more lively in the second half but they thought for a moment they were two down on the hour when Iashvili fired home again after Levan Koblashvili's shot deflected on to the post - but this time he had finished from an offside position.
Ireland started to camp in the Georgian half as the half developed and McGeady twice came close within the space of a minute.
However, they needed their gift from the referee to finally find the breakthrough with Keane showing great coolness to block out the Georgian protests and send Giorgi Lomala the wrong way.
Five minutes later Lomala made a superb save to deny a Doyle header but from the resulting corner a falling Keane then headed home from close range in a crowded box to put Ireland in front.
Thankfully for the Irish, that is where the drama ended, as Georgia struggled to adapt to their game-plan and press for an equaliser meaning Ireland could see out the game without any scares.
Trapattoni's side now have 10 points from 12 in the group going into massive matches against Bulgaria (home) and Italy (away) next month.
Georgia will complain about the manner of their defeat, but for this night at least, Ireland will take being lucky over being good.
Albania missed the chance to go top of 2010 World Cup qualifying Group 1 after drawing 0-0 with Malta.
Albania have six points from five matches, one behind Denmark and Hungary. Portugal and Sweden have five points and Malta one.

Very true markear1.. Trap always plays with 2 holding midfielders and 2 wingers...full stop.Reid doesnt fit into this formation and we have have 10 from 12pts.Lets face it Reid is not a great player and he never was.Dunphy is just filling Irish peoples minds that Reid is the saviour but in fact he is anything but.Stephen Reid and Finnan (Eventho he is stranded Spain)are much needed for the rest of the campaign but even after that we are still short a decent centre midfielder.Hard to say where Trap would fit Stephen Ireland into his plans
Whats all this rubbish about andy reid. He can't even hold down his spot at SUNDERLAND honestly think about, eamonn dunphy has got into your head Who we really need is stephen ireland, a fit stephen reid and steve finian.

The main thing is the result. Italy struggled against Cyprus and Georgia as well. Yes it turned on a ridiculous decison but that doesn't change the fact Ireland dominated the game all the way through and the Georgians spent the entire evening fouling, time wasting and diving. So @#$% them basically.
Ireland have no killer instinct. We need Andy Reid in to play the killer ball. Its what was missing in every game under Trappatoni. McGeady did well in the seond half but his final cross can be dissapointing!
Ireland teams have always struggled to be convincing against sides they are 'supposed' to beat (Malta, Cyprus, San Marino) and have a habit of upping their performance levels against better teams (France, Holland, Spain). There's a lack of real quality in several positions and the team is young and inexperienced so, while it may not be pretty at times, it is definitely to Trappatoni's credit that we are in the position we are in. Wish he'd give Andy Reid more of a go though...
no matter what they say about the ref , is a game to be won , we hav won period
i know it was not a penalty, but if you look at the replay, the georgian defender gently guides his arm towards the ball and i think that is why the ref gave the penalty
The luck of the Irish was certainly with us this time and beleive me it was LUCK with the HELP of the reff.. with the exception of Damien Duff,Shay Given,Kevin Doyle,Aiden McGeady we really had nothing to shout about..Ok 2-1 on the night was a great result but i tell ya what when we do come up against Italy we are gonna get killed unless something drastic is done to sort this RUBBISH football out..we played a bit better in the second half but overall it was sad to look at..I thought at the end of the match 1-1 would have been a fair score but a win is a win and it all goes down on record ... Regards

I think this result is a fair result for Ireland, the penalty was obviously a bizarre decision but if you look at the game over 90 minutes and also the goal that ireland had disallowed which seemed legitimate and the cynical and constant fouling by the georgian players it is a fair result. Ireland has it's fair share of dodgy refereeing decisions in the past, one that is permanently etched in my mind was the goal at the 1988 European championships against holland and knocked ireland out in what is considered one of the great Dutch teams , the goal scored by a certain Wim Kieft who was clearly offside and Holland went on to win european cup in. That said it dosn't exonerate the ref from last night but it also leaves me with a clear conscience as we deserve a slice of luck for a change.
sudia pidarast!!!!!!@#$% this referee
good idea i will aswell
1) First offside: player, that is "passively" standing in front of the goalkeeper, cannot be considered to be in "passive offside".
2) No comments on fishy penalty
3) Second goal was scored by irish team, after Kean fouled against georgian defender
All in all: more of a shame than a game, where referree's mistakes decided everything.
Lucky!

I think Seán Fay was watching another football match instead of this game. Ireland totally dominated after conceding early. They maintained 70% possession of the ball for the rest of the game. The Irish were denied a legitamite penalty call and had a goal disallowed but they continued to soak up rash tackles, stood back and counted as the Georgians racked up an unimpressive yellow card tally. It was only a matter of time before Irish pressure was rewarded with a goal. That it came via the penalty spot was almost a given as the visitors continued their reckless tactics and Keane's second goal while not pretty was well earned as he flung himself at a speeding cross and headed home. A well earned and a well deserved three points for Ireland. Bring on Bulgaria and Italy.
Everyone is talking of Keane and the referee. Why dont you write a book called the handball, the referee, the offside and the Keane?
