Wayne Rooney insisted he would relish being England captain - but acknowledged the matter is out of his hands.
John Terry has been stripped of the honour after the Chelsea defender's racism trial was put back until July 9, while Rio Ferdinand has said he is not interested in the position. However, Rooney would not reject the chance, and also believes Steven Gerrard would be a good choice to lead England into this summer's European Championships.
The Manchester United striker, who scored two goals in Saturday's 2-1 Barclays Premier League defeat of Liverpool, tweeted: "For everyone asking i would love to be england captain. But thats upto new manager to decide. Gerrard is perfect choice for me."

I see nothing wrong with Rooney wanting to be England captain. At least he's honest about it. What is often forgotten by readers of tabloids is that as a player he's top-notch, unselfish and hardworking. A great team player, too.
Laughable, both statements, Shrek would like to be captain, Why? he is an embarrassment to England both as a footballer and as a person, he is certainly not an ambassador of either. Gerrard should be captain! Why, he is injury prone and has only played a handful of games for his club this lasy 2 seasons and it is proven that he is a thug too. Then again, after Terry and Ferdinand both being recent captains, I suppose that both Rooney and Gerrard are the ideal candidates!!!!

ha! u lot just want to diss rooney. he did said that gerrard is the perfect choice for him! give it a rest u haters. rooney had magnificently held his emotions during last match with liverpool, when his shirt was grabbed by adams. he stayed cool! :P

Rooney needs to curb his attitude and temper before even considering throwing his hat into the ring for England captain. Terry should never have been reinstated in the first place.
