Paul Mayo's gaffe gave Jamie Forrester an 11th goal of the season as visiting Lincoln won 1-0 to push Notts County towards the relegation zone.Mayo was under no pressure when the cross came in from Dany N'Guessan, but the County defender managed to head his clearance straight to Forrester, who fired home.
County almost claimed an equaliser when Adam Tann's pass fell to Ryan Jarvis, whose fierce strike was parried by Alan Marriott with the follow-up cleared by Daniel Hone.
The Imps were content to sit back and play on the counter-attack in the second half as County had little to offer.
Spencer Weir-Daley chipped just wide before Jarvis and Richard Butcher both wasted good opportunities.
The home side's best chance fell to Mayo, but his header from Butcher's corner was cleared off the line by Scott Kerr.
