Paul Simpson has been appointed manager of Shrewsbury.

The former Preston and Carlisle boss, 41, joins on a three year deal after Gary Peters left the League Two club.

Simpson won promotion to League One with Carlisle in 2006 but lasted less than 18 months at North End before being fired in November.

The Shrews currently lie 12 points above the relegation places but, following a promising start to the season that saw them installed as play-off contenders, a run of six points in 12 matches saw Peters depart by mutual consent.

Simpson, meanwhile, entered management with Carlisle in 2005 after a stint as a player that saw him represent Manchester City, Oxford United, Derby and Wolves.

Peters's assistant, John McMahon, had been in temporary charge at the New Meadown.
