Both Sunderland and Newcastle United were charged with failing to control their players following an on-pitch melee involving several members of each side in the 19th minute of the 1-1 draw after a foul on Newcastle full-back Danny Simpson by Sunderland winger James McClean.
At the time, referee Mike Dean showed both players yellow cards after the fracas had subsided. The incident also sparked a quarrel on the sidelines between managers Alan Pardew and Martin O'Neill.
Sunderland and Newcastle have also confirmed in a statement that they have requested a personal hearing to discuss the incident further.
