Accies close in on promotion

Sat 12 Apr, 07:00 PM

Hamilton moved closer to the Scottish First Division title with a well-earned 3-1 win over battling Livingston at Almondvale on Saturday. The result maintains Hamilton's four-point lead over second-placed Dundee in the race to replace relegated Gretna in the SPL next season.

The visitors raced into a two-goal lead inside 39 minutes and were in command from that stage.

Richard Offiong put Accies in front after 25 minutes when he met a pass from Alex Neil and hit a low shot which took a slight deflection off Craig James to deceive goalkeeper Colin Stewart.

James McArthur made it 2-0 after 39 minutes, finishing off a good move involving Simon Mensing and Offiong.

Mensing made absolutely sure after 46 minutes when he drilled low into the left corner as Livingston failed to clear.

Livingston grabbed a deserved consolation when James McCarthy pulled down Steven Craig in the penalty area and Dave Mackay drilled home the spot-kick after 86 minutes.

Dundee were clinical 3-0 winners against Stirling, improving after half-time to score three second-half goals through Gary McKenzie, Gavin Swankie and Scott Robertson.

Hamilton can clinch the title next Saturday at New Douglas Park when they take on struggling Clyde in the penultimate round of games, while Dundee must travel to take on Scottish Cup finalists Queen of the South.

The top two will meet on the final day of the Scottish Football League season at Dens Park, for what could become a meaningless game.
