Seagulls soar as Hatters are downed

Sat 12 Apr, 08:15 PM

Brighton kept their faint play-off hopes alive with a 2-1 victory at Kenilworth Road that saw Luton's relegation to League Two confirmed. The hosts took the lead in the 49th minute with Sam Parkin's fourth goal in six games, but Ian Westlake equalised within 30 seconds before Glenn Murray headed his sixth goal since his January move from Rochdale in the 59th minute to consign the Hatters to the drop.

Brighton had the better of the opening exchanges with Westlake twice firing into the side netting in the opening 10 minutes when well placed.

Michel Kuipers saved from Don Hutchison and Parkin as Luton woke up before Parkin missed the best chance of the half, heading Ed Asafu-Adjaye's cross wide in the 43rd minute.

Parkin made amends four minutes after the interval, rounding Kuipers to score after Calvin Andrew had chested down Sol Davis's deep free-kick.

Brighton responded immediately as Dean Cox crossed from the right for Westlake to head in off the bar at the far post, and another Cox cross from the right set up the winner as Murray lost his marker to nod home from six yards.
