Stags struggling after stalemate

Sat 12 Apr, 08:15 PM

Mansfield's hopes of saving their Football League status are hanging by a thread after a 0-0 draw with relegation rivals Macclesfield. The watching Wayne Rooney, who was hoping to see his brother John come off the Macclesfield bench, witnessed a game of precious little quality.

The most controversial moment came off the pitch midway through the first half when prospective Stags buyer John Batchelor had to be escorted from the away stand after suffering abuse from Mansfield fans.

Mansfield's best chance to grab three precious points came in the 65th minute when Nathan Arnold's fierce low drive was blocked by the brave James Jennings.

Macclesfield had the better of the opening stages but young striker Gareth Evans squandered their best chance in the eighth minute when he headed tamely straight at Jason White.

The visitors did have the ball in the back of the net at the death but Jefferson Louis was flagged for offside.
