Champions League - United rule out more appeals

Eurosport - Tue, 12 May 08:34:00 2009

Manchester United ruled out further appeals against the red card that ruled Darren Fletcher out of the Champions League final against Barcelona.

2008-2009 Champions League Darren Fletcher sent off - 0

The club had questioned the sending off but, despite video evidence seeming to exonerate Fletcher, UEFA dismissed the case.

A United spokesman said: "Darren is an honest player and we felt we should do what we could to try and help him become eligible for the Champions League final by initially protesting his dismissal.

"However, we respect the referee's decision and we will therefore not be appealing against today's ruling."

The Scotsman was sent off for a tackle on Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas minutes from the end of United's 4-1 aggregate semi-final victory, despite appearing to take the ball.

Barcelona defenders Eric Abidal and Daniel Alves also failed to win appeals against suspensions and both miss the final.

Abidal was sent off by referee Tom Henning Ovrebo for an innocuous challenge on Nicolas Anelka in the second leg of the semi-final against Chelsea. Alves picked up a yellow card for a foul on Ashley Cole.

European football's governing body initially said the only grounds for appeal were in a case of mistaken identity but United, encouraged by comments from UEFA general secretary David Taylor, appealed on compassionate grounds.

However, UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body, said that the two clubs had failed to get their appeals in on time, but even if they had made the deadline they would have been rejected.

"There were no grounds for contesting the referees' original decisions," said a statement.

All three players will serve one-match bans during the final in Rome on May 27, although UEFA added the clubs would have three days in which to lodge appeals against this latest decision.

  9. Oh, and b.t.w. bosun, I doubt that my forefathers "slyly took over the region by sending in missionaries" ... 'cos my forefather were probably all a bunch of drunken marauding Scottish heathens who were far too busy fighting the Sassenach Hordes to @#$% about in Africa! LOL

  10. Who the @#$%'s talking about slaves bosun? If you're suggesting that Drogba is a slave, then he can join Ronaldo as one of the highest paid "slaves" in fcukin' history! I've lived and worked in West Africa, and have many, many friends down there who happen to be African, and yes, I do know where Ivory Coast is, I've worked out of Abidjan before, so unless you know more about the area than me, shut the @#$% up and stop trying to turn this football thread around to suit your own political tub thumping needs! My discussion with Go was about "football" and how "football players" should conduct themselves while playing the game of "football" ... got the fcukin' message yet?

  14. Johnny brandie - has it ever crossed your mind that maybe the 95% of the slave trade took place in west africa? That your forefathers slyly took over the region by sending in missionaries 1st to weaken the resilience of these people? Doubt it. But at least, they voice their minds out. They don't coyly destroy others.

Most of you have left the issue of Drogba's bad behavior, and are commenting about Africans. Now I have a poser for You all, WHO KILLED LADY DIANA?

  19. @ galbraith.andy and johnny.brandie: Dudes, please stop generalising and displaying your shocking ignorance. Cantona, Joey Barton, Di Canio, Rooney and numerous other European players have done similar and worse than what Drogba did. What does that tell us of French, English and Italian people? And when it comes to violent mob psychology, there's no one that takes that cake more than English football fans!! I've been on a flight to Cape Town that had to be turned back to Joburg cause of an unruly, rude and obscene "Barmy Army" cricket crowd. Please note that Drogba is Ivorian i.e. originating from Cote d'Ivoire. He is neither Nigerian nor Guinean.
