Middlesbrough's survival hopes have been dealt a blow with news that striker Afonso Alves will miss the final two games of the season with a broken foot.
The Brazilian was forced off the pitch midway through the first half of Boro's damaging 3-1 defeat at fellow strugglers Newcastle on Monday night.
"He will take no further part in this season's campaign after scans revealed the extent of the injury," the club said on their website.
Alves departed on a stretcher following a hefty challenge from Newcastle midfielder Nicky Butt and was replaced by Marlon King on 36 minutes.
Scans on Tuesday revealed a fractured metatarsal, meaning Alves will play no further part in Boro's fight against relegation.
Gareth Southgate's side are perilously close the drop following defeat at St James' Park - they lie second bottom, three points from safety, with two games to play.
And those fixtures are far from straightforward, with Boro welcoming Aston Villa to the Riverside at the weekend before travelling to West Ham on the final day of the season.

A poor buy and soon to be a loss
donneysbeck why are you such a bell end?
who cares he's @#$%
Alex fair point but he was @#$% for Arsenal and he's been crapper for Mids. Ive seen him miss a fair few that should have been. No composure thats his weakness.
i agree that Alves is NOT premiership material. BUT aliadiere hasn't been given much of a chance to prove himself this season.
Ahahaha as if this is a loss Aliadiere and Alves are the crapest strikers ive ever seen. I would even go so far as to say they are crapper than Heskey!!!
this guy is a brazilian striker? give me my money back now! He must have scored five goals in eighteen months at Boro which is why they are going down, down, down.
good riddens, aliadiere and emnes are both better forwards
he's had a broken foot since his first match with boro
who cares? he's out next season
survival hopes? who are you kidding. Championship hopes maybe.
oh well it doesent make much of a difference we have only got 2 games left and he was a waste of money has done nothing all season and now he is going to benefica at the end the end of the season. so i dont really care what happens to him because at the end of the day its the players fault and partly the managers that we are in this position when we shouldnt be so we deserve to be relegated
A WAS OOT AN THA SANSHEEN THAR BAT A HOV CAME BECK ANSEED CAZ ATS TAY HOT. ATS NEERLAY 20 DEGREES OOT THAR. FACKUN BARN YEE ALIVE.
