Premier League - Alves out for rest of season

Middlesbrough's survival hopes have been dealt a blow with news that striker Afonso Alves will miss the final two games of the season with a broken foot.

The Brazilian was forced off the pitch midway through the first half of Boro's damaging 3-1 defeat at fellow strugglers Newcastle on Monday night.

"He will take no further part in this season's campaign after scans revealed the extent of the injury," the club said on their website.

Alves departed on a stretcher following a hefty challenge from Newcastle midfielder Nicky Butt and was replaced by Marlon King on 36 minutes.

Scans on Tuesday revealed a fractured metatarsal, meaning Alves will play no further part in Boro's fight against relegation.

Gareth Southgate's side are perilously close the drop following defeat at St James' Park - they lie second bottom, three points from safety, with two games to play.

And those fixtures are far from straightforward, with Boro welcoming Aston Villa to the Riverside at the weekend before travelling to West Ham on the final day of the season.
