Premier League - Shearer conjures vital win

Eurosport - Tue, 12 May 15:35:00 2009

Alan Shearer made two inspired substitutions as Newcastle United beat Middlesbrough 3-1 at St James' Park to climb out of the Premier League relegation zone.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Premier League Newcastle United Newcastle-Middlesbrough Obafemi Martins after scoring in 3-1 relegation battle over local rivals Middlesbrough - 0

The Newcastle manager introduced strikers Obafemi Martins and Peter Lovenkrands in the second half, and both scored to earn his team a precious victory against their North East rivals.

A Habib Beye own-goal put Middlesbrough ahead inside five minutes, before Steven Taylor's powerful header saw the relegation battle into the break at 1-1.

Martins scored with his first touch after replacing Michael Owen on 71 minutes to put United ahead, and Lovenkrands sealed all three points with a convincing finish five minutes from time.

The result moves Newcastle above Hull City on goal difference and outside the bottom three.

Boro, meanwhile, slide deeper into the mire and are now three points from safety with just two matches of the Premier League season remaining.

It all started so well for Gareth Southgate's team when Tuncay's sharp turn in the box created space for a shot on three minutes

Steve Harper saved the Turkish striker's stabbed effort, but the Newcastle goalkeeper could only watch on in anguish as his parry was deflected into the net by the helpless Beye.

Boro's lead would last just six minutes.

Newcastle drew level when Taylor lost his marker and glanced home Danny Guthrie's right-wing corner with a firm header.

The goal gave the home side belief and on 27 minutes Brad Jones made a fine reaction save to stop Owen's goalbound header.

Boro's Marvin Emnes then shot wide after Harper saved his initial effort, but the teams went into the break all square.

The first genuine chance of the second half also fell to Boro, but once again Harper came to the rescue, parrying a powerful drive from Gary O'Neill.

With a draw no good for either side, Shearer then shuffled his pack - first introducing Lovenkrands for Jonas Gutierrez and then Martins for Owen, who once again delivered a low-key performance.

Martins had been on the field for just 55 seconds when he took possession inside the Boro box and shot past Jones, despite falling over in the process.

Lovenkrands sealed victory for Newcastle, blasting home Kevin Nolan's right-wing cross to send the St James' Park crowd into hysteria.

Shearer's team face Fulham at home next, before a trip to Aston Villa completes their season.

Boro, meanwhile, face Villa at home on Saturday, followed by a visit to West Ham on the final day.

  1. Cracking atmosphere again at the match, the free flags always help but the noise levels in our Gallowgate End was the second best this season. I can't believe Viduka has waited till the second last game of the season to produce a leader's perrformance. Too little too late for him? As we were walking to the ground we were passed by the 2 coaches of Boro fans, banging their windows and shouting obscenities and trying to spit out of the window. They drove past us after the game as we walked to our car, in complete silence..that was so sweet. We had the typical window lickers running towards the tv cameras to embarass the club after the match, saying that the Toon would be fighting for Europe next season. But for the real fans we are just happy tosee our team play with passion and pride again. I think we still need to beat Hull to avoid the drop butits possible if they play with that attitude. I hope Boro can somehow stay up but I don't think its possible. Unless the Makems continue their slump, which would makemy season..I would love it...love it..! SMB.

  3. Shearer made two inspired substitutions, can anybody remember Southgate making any in his whole time as Boro manager. Interesting if the three clubs West Brom, Hull and Boro go down they are all clubs who did not sack thier Managers. this season.

  4. as a newcastle fan im thrilled that we are out of the bottom 3 and hoping for some thing from the next 2 games but after that changes have got to be made a solid foundation on a manager thats there for the long haul and a base of young quality players ashley will have to spend or run along while hes still standing in the stands laughing with his pals he must be slowly goin grey at the thought of the money going down the swanny i agree butt, viduka, owen, duff should go but i havent got much time for enrique, coloccini, nolan, jonas, cacapa, geremi either and the 2 that wise brought in cisqo should have stuck to singing bout thongs lol and the loan guy who we have been payin all season and has been fit for half hours football what a joke. what about the players we talked about pre season gorkan inla and arda turan decnet internationals that arnt past there best

  5. Well done Newcastle, sorry Boro, I really do hope you can both get six points out of the next two games and as a Sunderland supporter we can get two. All football supporters in the North East actually have a lot in common: we support, live for - love our teams to the end and I want all three to be in the top flight. What I cannot understand and I am sure you are the same, is why can the likes of Fulham, Stoke, Aston villa, Everton, Totenham, West Ham produce the goods. We have better support, better facilities spend a mountain of money at different times, and yet all three teams consitently underperform, I dont just mean this year, but over say the last 10 years. It may be a subject for a University disertation - why cannot North East teams bridge the gap to the top flight or nearly top flight? It would really be nice to just to miss out on a Uafa cup place or Champions league, instead of just missing out on religation. I know rambling on - but like all other north east supporters - hoping for better next season.
    Shouting for you - Keith

  7. Iam so grrateful with the win that Newcastle has secured because I was not at all happy seeing the team relligated. I believe this win could be a turning point for Allan Shearer to inspire the team into more wins to pull them completely out from the mire.

  13. Further to my last comment If Newcastle dont get the TV revenue that being in the Premier league means and they do go down you only have to cast your mind back to Leeds how could the wage bill be maintained in the championship? I dont think Owen is past it but he is injury prone, and needs to be used sparingly after this season and for everything thats been said about Joe Kinear. at least he got rid of Insomnia for you !! watched him play at the weekend he was hopeless!! and letting Given go mid season may come back to haunt you big time. I hope that is not the case because i would much rather watch Newcastle at anfield than Hull!!!!!

  14. as a life long newcastle supporter i have to say that after reading most of what other people are saying i think the general census is people want newcastle should stay up. however if we do we need to do a lot of things differently, OWEN out, Viduka out, Smith out, Duff out. Butt out and Barton well you guessed it or did you, Jail, newcastle are a big club and our support is second to none, if Newcastle are ever to win something our so called chairman needs to get longer arms and not so deep pockets. Lets not get to carried away with last nights terrific win it will mean nothing if we dont beat fulham who lest not forget will not be coming to make up the numbers they have europe in there sights as do villa, 2 hard games to finish off the saeson but its in our hands, one last thing for the makem who wants us to stay up PLEASE TELL ME WHEN DID YOU LAST TAKE SIX POINTS IN A SEASON OFF US YOU MUG.

  15. Newcastle are now out of the bottom 3 on goal difference which at this stage of the season is unlikely to change. When it came to the crunch time and with Alan knowing he needed a win he made two subs which both scored to help win the game. This could be the turning point and might well save Newcastle, also Newcastle are a huge club they are one of the best attended grounds because it is a football city.

Do you know what makes this result more pleasing?
The fact that it upsets you lot this much!!!
Oh i bet you all had your puerile posts already composed and ready to send.
I actually believe this could be enough, but let's make sure by giving it our all again against fulham on Saturday.
Masterful tactics, masterful substitutions and job done!
Deal with it and live with it - ha, ha, ha, ha!!!!!

phil.lee32 how the hell can you say Nufc are bigger than Everton? What planet are you living on

The big clubs in England are traditionally the big four along with Spurs Everton and Villa NOT NEWCASTLE

NUFC are on a par with Stoke, City,Fulham,Sunderland etc..........

Not won anything since 69 and have been yoyo ing between divisions ever since

Everton have been in the top flight longer than any club including Man utd and Liverpool. They have wone the leahue 4th most times only behind Liverpool Man utd and Arsenal

NUFC are a nothing team they just make the numbers up
