Kuqi enjoying `best spell`

Crystal Palace striker Shefki Kuqi rates his renaissance at Selhurst Park this season as his best spell in English football.

The Finn's Eagles career looked to be over when he was forced to train with the youth team after making an obscene gesture to fans last term, but he was recalled in October and has now been offered a new contract after finishing as Palace's top scorer with 10 goals.

"Someone asked me the other day how I rated this season and I said to them that this is my best one in England," Kuqi told the South London Press.

"I scored 22 goals at Ipswich and I got eight Premier League goals in 15 starts for Blackburn, but in my opinion this tops those because of the situation I was in earlier in the season.

"My name to a lot of people was dead - I wasn't even being mentioned by anybody. But I came back to not only be the top scorer but I did really well for the team. I got told I would never pull on the Crystal Palace shirt again and was never going to kick a ball for the club - but now I'm in the situation where I could sign a new contract here.

"A lot of people thought my career was coming to an end but I always knew what I could give and I just had to prove that again. Most people who had to go through what I did wouldn't have come through and been in the position which I am in now."

  1. Good on the Shef. may not be high on the skill factor but the amount of effort that man puts in is very creditable and the fans want that more than anything else rather than high paid old lazy players

  2. you might not like his style of football, and if you are a palace fan you have to hate the gesture (and the following comments in the press) he made in that match last year, but you have to respect the man for the way he has knuckled down and EARNT a new contract. hated him last year, love the intensity he has played with this season. hope he gets a new contract, and stays on....
