Hook to start against Springboks

James Hook will start at full-back for the first time on Saturday after coach Warren Gatland reshaped his team for the second Test against world champions South Africa.

James Hook - Wales - 0

Gatland named four new starters and seven positional changes after the Six Nations champions were defeated 43-17 in the first test.

Hook takes over from Jamie Roberts at fullback, Gareth Delve comes in at number eight and Rhys Thomas starts at tighthead prop.

Roberts has been moved to centre where he replaces Sonny Parker and Richard Hibbard starts at hooker in place of the injured Matthew Rees.

In the back row, Jonathan Thomas moves to openside flank with Daffyd Jones dropping to the bench and captain Ryan Jones moving to the blindside to make way for Delve.

"If you win the collisions you tend to win the game," Gatland said. "That's an area we've got to improve on significantly this week."

Gatland said the team management wanted to get Hook on to the field.

"He's such a talented footballer, he's got great footwork, we know how good he is at kicking the ball out of hand, and he gives us another goal-kicking option as well," he said.

"Positionally, there's a little bit of work for James to do, but we expect him to slot in there pretty comfortably."

Gatland said Parker needed a knee operation when he returned to Wales.

"Given how physical the South African midfield were last week, we decided to give Jamie an option at centre, at 110 kgs we just hope he can give us some go-forward in midfield to get across the advantage line," he said.

"Gareth Delve and scrumhalf Gareth Cooper are club mates from Gloucester, so there's a combination there. We felt that Gareth deserved an opportunity , he performed well in the Six Nations and when he came off the bench over the weekend."

Meanwhile, South Africa coach Peter de Villiers recalled three top players for the match.

Lock Victor Matfield, named the most valuable player of the 2007 World Cup, scrumhalf Enrico Januarie and tighthead prop BJ Botha return to the starting lineup. They are joined by Zimbabwe-born debutant Tendai Mtawarira, the Natal Sharks loosehead prop.

The Sharks duo of loose forward Ryan Kankowski, who enjoyed an outstanding Super 14 series, and utility back Francois Steyn have been named on the bench.

"We're expecting Wales to come out blasting because I'm sure they would have worked on their shortcomings from the first test," de Villiers told a news conference.

"So I'm bringing the big guns on to the field and we want to build to where we want to be for the Tri-nations."

Matfield, 31,who has won 68 caps, replaces Andries Bekker, who made his debut in last weekend's victory.

Januarie returns for Bolla Conradie after serving a one-match suspension for off-field indiscipline.

De Villiers and captain John Smit said scrummaging had been the one area the Springboks had worked hard on in the last week, with Botha and Mtawarira replacing last week's debutant Brian Mujati and Gurthro Steenkamp.

"I want to be clear about what we have in the front row before we go overseas and we put more emphasis on scrumming this week, after working hard on the lineouts last week," De Villiers said.

"We never want to put two scrumming performances like that together in a row," Smit said. "It was partly my fault because the scrumming session was the one I sat out last week, so we didn't have the time or opportunity to prepare properly before the first test. But we've managed to work on the scrums quite successfully this week."

Smit said the Springboks expected a much better display from Wales on Saturday.

"We'd be foolish not to expect a much stiffer challenge. We made a reasonably good start to the season last week, but there was lots of work to be done and we concentrated on tightening our defence, communicating better, fixing our scrum and launching better from first phase," he said.
