UCI annonce Giro rival in Russia

Eurosport - Thu, 12 Jun 13:05:00 2008

World cycling's ruling body have officially the creation of a UCI-backed race in Russia.

CYCLING 2007 Gent-Wevelgem Feature Peloton - 0

It will be held as a Pro Tour race for the first time in the region of Sochi, the venue for the 2014 winter Olympics, on May 20-24, 2009 - although it will be in direct competition with the Giro d'Italia.

The UCI remains in conflict with the organisers of some major stage races, such as the Tour de France, Spain and Italy. Currently the Tour de France is no longer part of the Pro Tour that was established by the UCI three years ago.

The UCI also evoked the possibility of again tinkering with the dates for the world road race championships as of 2012.

Traditionally held at the end of August up to 1994, they were moved to October then the end of September in order to balance the international cycling calendar, and to allow the Tour of Spain to be held in September.

Now the UCI is studying moving the championships from September to the start of August. A decision is set to be made during the 2008 world road race championships in Varese, Italy.

  2. I agree to be honest with you i think the war that is happening between UCI and ASO is Daft as at the end of the day they are spoiling the sport for the supporters as well as the riders and i hope the riders do go to the more historical races as this might make UCI to clean there acts up abit and make it so that we can have these new events plus the worlds alongside the big tours such as Giro and vuelta before they do destroy the image of this great sport!

  3. thanks uci for trying to ruin this wonderful sport. Those moneygrabbing people are willing to contrast traditional and historical races to give way to races hedl in countries willing to pay big money. UCI will be disappointed again, nobody listened to them when they tried to boycott the paris nice, all the star riders went to the classics despite not being included in the protour and all the top rider will go to the giro and vuelta a catalunya rather than go to this new race in russia. The supporters of the sport won't let you destroy this sport!!!
