WSBK: Airwaves Yamaha to race at Donington

Fri, 12 Jun 09:15:26 2009

BSB regulars Airwaves Yamaha will compete at the Donington Park round of the World Superbike Championship, having confirmed that both Leon Camier and James Ellison are set to ride against the world's best on June 28.

The Airwaves Yamaha team is the same GSE Racing Ducati team that enjoyed so much success in World Superbike in the past. It is the latest incarnation of the team that brought on the talents of Troy Bayliss, Neil Hodgson and James Toseland, all of whom went on to be World Champions later in their careers.

The current Airwaves team is in its first year using Yamaha equipment, but despite this they are sitting 1-2 in the British Championship as we speak, with Leon Camier 38 points ahead of team-mate James Ellison. Camier is new to WSB competition, but Ellison is a true product of the WSB paddock, having won the European Superstock Championship twice before running in WSS for a season. Last year, when riding a BSB Honda as a wildcard in WSB, he secured a top four at Donington, in race 2. He has six race starts to his name in WSB, but his overall experience covers a vast array of classes and categories.

For Camier, this new adventure is one he has anticipated for a long time: "Ever since the team told me we were going to be wild cards at Donington Park, I have been counting down the days! It is going to be really interesting to see how we perform against the World Superbike teams. We know the competition will be tough, but we'll be working flat out to see a British team on the podium at our home round. Hopefully the Airwaves Yamaha fans will be there to support us! It'll be a tough few weeks going straight from Snetterton to Donington Park and then to Knockhill, but I can't wait."

Ellison, who made his winning breakthrough in BSB at Donington recently, stated: "I've always loved racing at Donington Park. Scoring my first ever BSB victory there a couple of weeks ago makes the place even more special. It's a real honour to be competing in the British round of the World Superbike Championship for Airwaves Yamaha. I want to thank them for giving me this incredible opportunity. I know how proud the team is of their winning trophies from 2000, so it would be a dream come true to win a few more."
